Damned front spring broke - easy or hard?

Featured Replies

So had a rattle like a bunch of keys this evening, only to get to my hotel and find my front offside spring has busted.

Is this a mega nightmare to change both front springs?

And £71.99 Each !!!!! Fk me thank god for ECP Mad60 offer both for £98.51

And driving? yay or nay? considering I'm in Cambridge and live in Bristol ??

Not the worst of jobs to DIY but you will require some beefy tools and a spring compressor.

Plan on a lazy couple of hours per side and expect collateral damage when seized/rusted fasteners require grinding off and new parts fitted.

I have the 'sport' option suspension on my PD105... Like it needed it!  The springs are VAG only at £85 each, yes I have replaced both.

I drove hundreds of miles on broken springs and never had an issue YMMV.

well sachs are like I said £98 a pair.

I'm hoping my mechanic family member can help, god knows what it will cost in a garage.

anyone in Cambridge recommend a garage?

You should be ok as long as the broken spring doesn't force its way past the cup to the tyre!  Not a great situation.  I couldn't imagine a dealer or independentnt charging much more than 2.5 hours for both sides so it depends on their labour rate, anything from 60 to 140 plus vat depending on which way you go. PLus, as pointed out, you may require some ancillaries when doing the job.

well thankfully it broke and stayed in the cup. and it also broke on the inboard side not wheel side

Depending on car's mileage, you may want to look into replacing any mounts/bolts whilst there.  I'm not in any hurry to do suspension work myself, loaded springs have a LOT of energy in them ha.

Well I changed the shocks and springs both sides, but wish I had done the mounting cups too now, as when replacing one of the bolts the nut came off the top mounting total arse. so now I need to replace the top mounts which I don't think is possible with the shocks on the car is it?

any advice?

Not impossible but very cramped.
