Steering wheel feedback when braking.

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

Seeing if there are any common issues with the symptoms stated below:

When braking (straight line and wheels turned) i have a feedback coming through the steering wheel. I'd describe it as a 'warped disc' feeling, i.e. the wheel judders but not violently. It's highlighted further when braking on a corner (obviously don't do this, just tried for fault diagnosis).

I know it's not warped discs, and realistically this never happens, but have had a DTI on them and they're running true.

Areas I've inspected briefly whilst it was jacked up:

Wheel bearings - no movement or untoward noises.

Calipers - tight as should be, check torqued.

Pads - even wear with no high or low spots etc.

Discs - no warping, lips or cracks etc.

Any help or advice is great before i start replacing or looking in the wrong area.

Cheers.

Assuming you have no movement in your suspension bushes or rack, and that all your shocks and springs are ok, it could be pad transfer onto the disc if you don't brake that hard on a regular basis.

You can normally get rid of this by doing several hard stops from 60-70mph down to an almost stop on a quiet bit of fast road.

Are all your wheel balance weights still securely attached, and the wheels tight?.

Whens last time the disc / pads were changed?

Ive had this on pretty much every car ive owned and everytime new disc and pads go on its then been fine..

Ive never owned a new car, and usually theyre still on original discs when i get them..

Or.... it could be tyres?

From what I've seen, the pads and discs were changed in late 2013 (previous owner, i bought in October 16)

Wheels are balanced, as doesn't occur during normal driving, purely when applying the brake.

If the discs/pads have been on three years I'd change them.

I've had this on my Octy and two previous cars as well and new discs and pads sorts it everytime. When it happened on current car it was from the first day I drove it - discs and pads were less than 3k old based on paperwork but pad/disc transfer from previous owner holding it on the brakes at traffic lights. All fine after they were swapped.
