I've opened the terminal application but have now hit feelings of hopelessness!

It's been mentioned quite a few times on here - so once you posted images showing Mac files the problem was obvious.

 

When I browse files on my NAS drive using my Macbook and then again using a PC it's clear just how many (hidden) files the Mac writes into folders.

But, problem solved!   (just not by me)

 

A long time ago....... in a Galaxy far, far away...

Was a wasteland known as The place of Loft.

Now, in the place of Loft, was a a sad, decrepit droid known as D610, from the Latitude of Dell.

D610 was last awake in the era of star date August 2014.  In the time before Mac.

Sad D610 always felt he was destined for better things.  He only wanted a master to serve, and serve well he would.

But his memory had faltered. He was suffering from an addiction of anti-virus, coupled with the burden of Ad-aware, both of which were too much for his creaking circuits, and some had fried themselves in an effort to keep up.

And so, little D610 sat there, patiently waiting.  Until this very day. When from the place known as 'downstairs' came the message.  It was a howl of anguish, but D610 knew that behind that message was its calling.  And life once again stirred for D610, who began to buzz and crackle with excitement.

D610 was found, by a kindly soul, Prot, who gathered little D610 up in his arms and started his quest to journey to the planet Eastbourne on a beam of light.  Where on arrival little D610 was reunited with his master, Gazza the Hut.

Now Gazza was a very mournful being, but great cheer was had upon the realisation that D610 was alive, and needed but a few minutes of fettling past the valley of 'dead battery', the horrors of 'update now' and battlements of 'Your 'puter is not safe'.

But make it it did, and D610 shone a light for its master, pointing towards the nasty 956 hidden files and two folders that were hitherto unseen by Gazza the Hut, lurking in shadows unknown.  Joyously did Gazza and D610 go into battle.  They swung the delete key with might, as only warriors can, smiting files and folders until none but the good were standing.

And when they had finished, a mutual nod was exchanged, for they knew they had done well 

And balance was restored to the Amundsen.

And victory was celebrated with laps of the A27 and its tributary, the bypass of Hailsham, to the sound of music and merriment.  The End.

 

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.  Wouldn't have got there without it, and I'm very grateful indeed.
