timing belt replacement

Featured Replies

Hi Can anyone give some information please on how to replace a timing belt on a skoda Octavia Elegance 1.9 tdi 2004. Thanks

Hi, as another newby here, You'll need to provide some information as to what engine code yours is. AHF, ASV? Anyway, depending on the engine, it can be a reasonably involved job. Find out your engine code and start googling. Don't forget to include that info here.

Hi, Thanks for that. Will look for the engine code as suggested.

If youre asking how, you probably shouldnt be doing it ;)

Well, you're probably right - I'm an OK DIYer, but I did the research and saw it was just too involved for me. Happy to tackle most stuff, but this is an area that in one fell swoop you can knacker your engine. Pay out the bucks for this and recoup in other areas like oil, coolant, gearbox, brakefluid changes, or the like. Most servicing is easily taken on.

Thats gonna inspire confidence:D

@lilpet - I'd say no, because to set the injection timing up properly requires VCDS or a VAG dealership computer, and that really does make a difference.

Also, you will need to be able to support the engine nose, because you have to remove an engine mount to fit the new belt.

@huwants2no - You get the idea about the level of knowledge and equipment required?

@KenONeill sure do mate. Was havin a laugh. But have watched a few vids on timing belts and do agree its defo ajob for a garage.if your lucky you can borrow one for a day but most of us are driveway diy'ers so i know im gonna have to pay to get my belt done shortly as much as id love to help someone who knows they're stuff so i could learn

Thanks for all that. I have replaced a timing belt on a BMW previously, but wasn't as complicated as the Octavia sounds. So I guess I will save up and take it to a garage. Thanks once again.

@lilpet - I know exactly what you mean; I've done plain timing belts on in-line engines, but not only is this transverse, but it also uses the same belt to control the fuel and camshaft timing.
