Does this unnamed oil (or is "KAST" the maker's name, in which case "Never heard of it!") also have a VAG500 series code on it? The stuff I can get locally (Comma or Powertrain) has Fiat, Ford, GM, PSA and VAG standards all quoted on the cans.

Looked recently at oil on both eurocarparts and carparts4less and they were both a lot pricier then usual, despite their so-called discount codes...

I usually use Petronas 5000 av- syntium (I think) but it was around £60 where I usually get it for mid £20's. Marked up, to discount?

& you should find that at ASDA for a very good price and supplied to them from a very good oil manufacturer and in a ASDA branded container.

That is good enough for me and quite clear

my handbook tells me..now i have taken the trouble to look at it...;)

says

505-01 is the oil for my 1.4 diesel Tdi as it doesnt have the particulate filter.. and the handbook has the sticker with all the codes...mine doesnt have it.

so from what you say Asda stuff...which meets that criteria will do the job

there is an Asda about 1 mile away and we shop regularly..will check next time

many thanks again

cheers

Anything that has the code should be ok, just some will be more ok then others! Top up with a cheaper brand, change the oil, fill up with filter change etc, with what you can budget for. Many products are made by other branded names, just under supermarket name or even say, VW parts, made by Bosch, gates, etc with VW stamped on. Exactly the same part usually quids cheaper at ECP etc, with only the original makers stamp... Same part code, quality.

We often pay more thinking we are getting more, although I'd steer clear of pound discount outlet oil, to be sure!

thanks..i checked on ecp as you mooted and see there is an outlet in threemilestone

further investigation shows me its for trade...:(

no worries...

do you have an account with them...

cheers

No, ECP will trade with anyone, so no worries there.  One thing though, maybe register with them and order on line for collection and use any active discount codes.

The reason for that is, quite a few items will have an on line price, but if you then walk into the outlet, the price will be different!  I keep ordering stuff for collection, then while I'm in there, grab a couple of tins of brake cleaner - which is not dear, but costs a bit more than their quoted on line price!!

When I went to collect and pay for the pollen filter today, I had a good look over their display of Laser Tools - but managed to avoid buying at store prices.

Also, best to keep an eye on weekend offers, last weekend was a 60% off - well maybe 60% off some service items, not all of them, but all the same I got maybe 30+% off that filter.

Geof, If you haven't already been to Asda then get thee to Opie Oils on the Cardrew Industrial estate in Redruth, renowned international suppliers of everything oil-wise that you'd need! They'll sort you out with an oil and filter service kit (they throw in gloves, spill wipes and disposable funnel).

Link if it's allowed, http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-337-cars.aspx , please remove if it isn't. Just plug your car details into the boxes and Presto!

Highly recommended, I've used them a few times.

Ah, I forgot about you being near Opie Oils, I think that they will be either listed on this site or at least no one will bother about that link, once again, you should register online for them as maybe it will be cheaper than turning up on their door step - if indeed they go on site sales, it would save on the carriage though so worth checking on their website! I've used them many times for oil, mainly 10 litre buys to avoid paying carriage!
