Recommend a DIY Blowtorch for Heating Tie Rod Knuckle?

Featured Replies

Not done the heating route before so wondered if anyone could advise - would this sort of thing give the heat required?

I have a seriously stuck tie rod end. When I say seriously I mean it's NOT budging.  The car had been sat for 3 years without moving - the other side came out with a struggle but one side is refusing. And yes, I have used a big hammer, and some big, stood up, full weight, full "golf club" clouts on the side of the knuckle.  As well as trying the pickle fork, and the scissor type ball joint splitter - well, it bent the pivot in that, stripped the threads and I ended up having to drive the pin out of the ball joint splitter just to get the splitter off.

So stripping out the grease from the joint and heating the knuckle up seems to be the next step

Do these cheap canister type torches give enough sustained heat to warm it up enough to expand the knuckle?

Resolved anyway. With a long breaker bar, a foot and a bigger hammer :D
