Fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Hi all can VCDS tell the fuel consumption on car because mine on the dashboard is reading between 34 / 37mpg which is really bad.

So a was wondering could the diagnostics tell me the true reading if the car is reading wrong.

Thanks Graeme

@Taximan1978 I know taxi drivers don't like doing this, but fill up until the pump clicks off at the start of your day, zero the trip meter, do your day, and then fill right up again.

(Trip miles * 4.5) / second fill will then give you mpg and not a computer or a diagnostics cable in sight!

I have VCDS software, but it doesn't show mpg. My 2010 tdi estate displays around 30-35 mpg for the first 3-4 miles until the car warms up. Then it climbs up to the 50s. I have noticed that the trip meter hardly ever records what I actually achieve at the pump. I have had 61mpg, but more usually 55 to 58. (the worst I can remember in the 30 months I've had the car is 52mpg). I always fill the tank and reset the trip meter. Last week I filled up with slightly over 12 gallons and 698 miles on the trip meter which is about 58mpg. I can't think of a time during that period when the meter actually showed 58mpg, more typically 50 to 55mpg at the end of a run. So either the computer is showing a lower figure or the odometer is recording more miles than I have travelled in reality - but I don't believe that. (I tend not to use the car for short distances, my wife's Ford Ka does those)

Thanks even on a good run a struggle to get 47mpg on the dashboard computer.

A just thought maybe if a plugged the computer in and did a drive maybe it might come up with something when a do a live data a think that's what it's called.

Maybe an injector working a bit less than the others a don't no just clutching at straws.

Cheers.

How many miles do you get from a tank full from where you drive, and how many litres does it take to refill after doing those miles.

ie real MPG, or miles to a litre.

I'd suggest there is an issue with your car, I have a 1.9tdi estate 77k on the clock today's 13 mile journey to work ( rural B roads with about 3 miles A roads  average mph 37 ) on board stated 62.7 mpg overall mpg ( number 2 reading ) 58 mpg for however long that equates too ( last 9999 miles ? )

have you checked for a brake binding ?

A did think that so a serviced the brakes but to no avail still just as bad.

A have had a new engine fitted and the old BXE engine was mint 44/46 mpg round the doors but this new engine a BLS a think that's the new code was fitted the fuel economy has been dreadful ever since.

So this is what am thinking does this engine need to be programmed to the ECU to be performing properly.

Am a barking up the wrong tree.

Did they change the ECU when they changed the engine from a BXE to a BLS? I'd suggest that the built in mapping "might" be different for the two engines despite them being similar.

Possibly the best way forward is to take it to a tuner who can remap it with economy in mind rather than performance.

No just the engine but that's a good point about the ecu that's what a was thinking getting it checked but a don't no if it would be expensive or not

I usually average low 50s MPG and that's cruising at a steady 50mph on the motorway using cruise control, the best ever was 59 mpg on s journey from Motherwell to Rochdale and back...The onboard computer usually shows about 5-8 mpg more than my actual figures ....

Having said that I've been driving since not long after buying the car with a boot full of junk, weighing quite a bit, and I'd the tyres set on only 30psi to soften the ride a bit ... I've recently upped the tyres to 33psi and have noticed a slight improvement and this week gutted the boot out so I'm hoping to see another slight improvement

Different engine code would suggest different ECU programming. Could be the ECU is programmed to the specs of the BXE's EGR, injectors etc. And thats causing the issue. Two options would be find an ECU from a BLS model, or get yours remapped (though making sure they map it for the BLS engine not a BXE). As you can see in my signature, my BKC engine does quite a bit more than your mid 30s, and thats averaging mpg over 30,000 miles and with a full boot of work equipment 99% of the time.

Thanks for the replys but it's trying to find someone who knows what they are doing and who's good enough on doing the job for not silly money.

Thanks

Any luck getting this sorted?
