My day at Forge Motorsport...

Featured Replies

I travelled upto Gloucester today to visit Forge Motorsport for then to supply and install a FMIC and TIP. Heres a few shots of the FMIC being done, others will follow tomorrow but Im shattered from the drive back so am off to get some 'zzzzzz's now.

I'd like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Rob, Richard and Peter for the service they provided today. I havent been so impressed by a company's attitude in a long time! The workshops are spotless, the service is professional and the quality of the hardware is exceptional! I am one happy customer! :D

Heres a few shots to be getting on with...

Forge exchange the crash bar for the one in your car...saves having to drill through it to fit the FMIC.

Yep as Adrian has correctly stated - they supply a new (genuine part) crash bar thats modified for air flow underneath, threaded ready for the mounting of the intercooler and a small inner piece removed to allow the pipes to run behind/within the crash bar itself - totally out of sight. Ive seen a lot of car related, so called after market 'kits' and this is simply the best thought out, best developed one ive seen/used.

My 4x4 bumper is different to the VRS bumper - it doesnt get swapped but has to be very slightly modified - a small part is removed inside it and I do mean small - say 3 by 1 inch if that - its just to stop it resting against one of the new pipes. It doesnt affect the bumper of car in anyway whatsoever though and cant be seen once the bumper is put back on.

I realise the FMIC wont 'add' power but hopefully by keeping the temp sensor readings lower the engine wont be pulling the timing and retarding power. It should also mean that the car drives almost as well in the summer months as it does now. :D

I think I remember chopping a similar 3" x 1" sliver out of Xav's bumper during the fitting of his FMIC at the TSR day.

I did it while his back was turned so he didn't panic seeing me with a stanley knife near his new shiny FMIC pipework and rubber bends. :D

That rings a bell although we had the luxury of a ramp and workshop so we dropped the bumper off again for the mod. This was the result' date=' very neat and unnoticeable once the bumper grills go back in place. :) ....

And heres a few comparison photos of the standard intake pipe and the Forge replacement item...

why is the standard pipe so flat? To aid gas flow speed at low rpm?

or to restrict the intake flow perhaps !?

out of interest does the fact that the FMIC is right infront of the radiator affect the radiator cooling at all?

Not that you'd notice, i dout they would do it if it did affect it lol

dont forget radiator has two big fans on it

This might be a daft question but how is the rubber pipe held to the turbo? I see that the metal version has a tab that bolts it on.

I think you will find it is held on with a jubilee clip, but might be wrong.

I have the ABD racing one on my OctyvRS and that bolts onto the turbo, and it really does make a difference, the turbo spools up lots quicker than with the squashed bend standard one.

EDIT:- You beat me to it, yep that is the ABD Racing one I have on mine.

Its nice to see a real stealthy Octavia - I considered the FMIC before I had my remap but was told it wouldnt' fit behind the non-vrs bumper :(

Does anyone know what's fitted to the VRs I'm still unsure about the k03/k04 , after reading this

What is the difference between the K03 turbo and the K04 turbo for the 1.8T engines?

Answer : The Borg Warner (formerly KKK) K03 is used in both the Audi A4/Passat, and the Golf/Jetta/Beetle/TT models. Let's look at the features that are shared in common, and then break out the differences by model.

Similarities

The K03 and K04 share the same bolt pattern for the manifold side and the downpipe/catalytic converter side. They also share the same fitting size and orientation for the coolant and oil lines. Both have an integrated wastegate that connects to the factory VW wastegate control module. So, the K04 is truly a "bolt on" replacement for the K03. Both units spool up very quickly and offer excellent low-mid RPM response and horsepower. The K04 is an excellent "Stage 1" or "Stage 2" upgrade, good for up to 225HP on the A4/Passat, and up to 240HP on the Golf/Jetta/Beetle/TT.

Differences, A4/Passat

Compared to the K03 turbo found in all 1997-later Audi A4 1.8T, and 1998-later VW Passat 1.8T, the K04 has a 5mm larger bore and vanes on both the compressor and turbine sides.

Differences, Golf IV, Jetta IV, Beetle, Audi TT

Compared to the K03 found in 1999-2000 Golf, Jetta and Beetle 1.8T, and 1999-2000 Audi TT 180HP 1.8T, the K04 has a 5mm larger bore and vanes on both the compressor and turbine sides.

2001-later cars are fitted with a different K03 turbo compared to earlier models. These K03 units already have a 5mm larger compressor side. So, the K04 only offers an advantage on the turbine side, where it has a 5mm larger bore and vanes.

thanks again

The Octy vRS has the KO3s as standard

As do drive-by-wire Elegance and 4x4 models.

Looks like i am off to forge for a TIP. Waiting for price fitted.:)

Jubilee clip..IIRC.

Thanks guys, my quest for more power continues
