MK1 FABIA VRS!! Gearbox will not drop!!!

Help!

6 hours spent trying to drop the gearbox to replace clutch, 3 of which have been wrestling with the gearbox. Can it be done without removing subframe? Is this where I've been going wrong?

So...

12 hours and clutch Change is complete. For anyone trying at home, always remove the subframe first, a 15min job which would have saved me 6 hours.

On on another note, when the gearbox dropped and I inspected the knackered clutch I found caked on clay-like grease all over the inside of the housing and on the flywheel teeth. Took ages to clean out!

any ideas what this is?

Strange about the subframe.

i've never touched them changing clutches etc...

It's a mixture of engine oil, gearbox oil and clutch plate dust.

I have no idea how, but hours of me and another strong bloke wrestling under a ramp would not let it drop. But for the 15 minutes it took to drop the subframe, I won't do it any other way in the future.

You do need to take the long thin Torx bolt from the inner driveshaft out the gearbox and it drops straight down.
