Possible boost leak?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I've had my fabia for a couple of weeks and seems a little down on power and MPG is only staying at the 40mpg mark even on a journey. The car isn't remapped. The car isn't really smoking unless moving away/parking and puffs a little black smoke out. When accerating I can't see any smoke out the mirror etc, the car does whistle as soon as throttle is touched or when cruising off boost, with a roar when on boost. However this could be due to the decat and straight pipe (with tip, no boxes) should my MPG be higher than 40ish mpg on a run? Where else should I be looking?

Also the EGR valve join seems to be a little oily. I will add a photo imagine could benefit from clean or delete?

Thankyou

I did clean the area to see the extent of the leak with degreaser however on the inlet you can see some of the residue and also on other parts of the EGR. The join where the hex bolts are was where the soiling was

thanks

With a decat you will hear lots more turbo noise but depending on mileage etc its likely getting tired and with your mods I expect it gets driven harder than average joe would drive it.

It points towards Maf but normally smoke accompanies this. Maybe start with a good service, fuel filter air filter etc

Also fuel economy does drop a little in hotter weather with tdi's anyway.

Egr weeping is normal to an extent,  I got rid of mine. If turbo oil seals weeping then it would see more oil. Would make sense of your whistling turbo if its over loud.

Take the bumper and see if the plastic intercooler surround has rubbed through the intercooler. It's quite common

The turbo is actually surprisingly good! I changed the exhaust system as it had seen better days and nice to get shiney new parts :P the shaft is solid, the turbo doesn't "coo" on lift off no smoke etc seems really healthy!

I dont drive this car hard, got the other car purpose built for that, this is purely a motorway/mile muncher just feels down on power/real slow.. maybe because it's unmapped and I've just got used to it like I said only had it a couple of weeks

Thats good to know,  if you do have boost leak issues due to worn parts i have stuff that may help.  Its for sale on here.

It sounds like starting with a good service would be a good start though?

Good luck

It has been serviced just as the car was bought - can see the air filter was brand new along with the diesel filter under the bonnet. Can see it's all brand new. I am looking at doing it again shortly though once funds improve. Just for a piece of mind to do scheduled services :)
