Pick-up when cold

Featured Replies

My Superb is my first diesel. I just wanted to ask if other people's cars have the same behaviour:

When I fire mine up in the morning, for the first minute or so, the car's off-the-line abilities are somwhat compromised.

When I drive to the end of my street and turn to join the main road, I can floor the throttle, and there's a delay of at least a second before anything happens, which can be a long time when there's something barreling up towards you.

After a minute or so, this behaviour disappears and the car drives normally.

It's a 1.9 pdi auto.

Do "they all do that sir"?

Cheers,

Rob

Come to think of it, mine does the same. Never really thought about it, and just put it down to startup. Don't know if that's normal, or whether it just us guys with the auto that get it.

Wonder if the manual version has the same issue?

Chris

TDIs are just crap when cold. Sure they will go, but its not good for the mechanics of it. I've found mine really needs 5 minutes of coaxing along before its happy. :) Get that oil warmed up a bit first.

Have to agree. Mines a bit lathargic when cold. Once the juices are flowing, she's more than happy to move....

The petrol 1.8T also has this 'problem' - both the engine and gearbox feel tight when the oil is cold - give it 10 minutes or so to get her fully lubricated and warmed up and then she will be ready for a good hard ride :naughty: ;)

Just as a check it might be worth seeing what coolant temp sensr you have on there. If its an old black one then get it changed for a green item.

It's always a good plan to warm up the engine before booting it about, regardless of petrol/diesel. Even more so when it's a turbo IMHO.

Diesels are rubbish at warming up due to the way they work. Annoyingly to warm them up you've got to work the engine - I'm still looking into a fuel-based pre-heater just for that reason.

Really have not noticed this problem with my V6 2.5 diesel.

It's not like it won't pull as such, it's just a little less compared to properly warmed up.

Mine is very sluggish in the morning and takes ages to go when you accelerate, especially in 2nd gear but then I have always put this down to the oil needing time to become warm and move around the engine!!

One thing that does annoy me is the gear change on a cold morning, the feedback is not as good as my previous VW and it's almost like it doesn't want to go into gear!!

Same again here, and mine is a manual 1.9 130.:(

same here: although it's fine within about 2 mins and i'm a bit careful at not booting it at all hard until the temp's got over abotu 70...
