Rear light issues.

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have been struggling with rear cluster issues for some time now. So far I have deduced that the top most twin filament bulb which operates brake and side light and the bottom most bulb which is fog and side light are at fault. However it is only the 4w elements top and bottom, n/s and offside side lights that fail to illuminate. This is accompanied with the dashboard warning bulb light and an incomplete "C" shape rear light peculiar to the Octavia.

I have tried replacing all four dual filament bulbs for new ones and I have also tried swapping another rear cluster off of a friends Octavia II. The fault remains and so I have ruled out a fault with the cluster itself?

I noticed that both his and my cluster do not have a wire to the 4w elements. How is his receiving current and not mine?

Is there a fuse that I have failed to check? The owners manual isn't clear which ones are relevant.

Or is it can bus programming error. Is there a code specific to those particular elements? The 2 3w bulbs independent of the cluster are functioning normally and form my entire rear side light illumination at the moment. The battery replacement had no effect on this fault.

You might want to add what year and model your Octavia is, where in the world are you and have you got access to VCDS?

On my FL, the top/bottom tail light function is achieved by dimming the 21W filament to suitable brightness rather than using the separate 4W filament. This is why there is the 4W side isn't wired up.

Assuming the brake and fog lights work, the tail light function should also be fine as it's the same wires and control module outputs.

Hello there, thanks for your reply.

My car is a 2005 1.9tdi ambient and I live in the East Sussex area. My friend has the vcds on his computer. We gave that a try but it didn't flag up any faults associated with the rear lights. Also when we scrolled through the various coding options specific to the rear lights none of the options seemed  relevant. I must admit we tried it on lunch break so were pushed for time.

The brake and fog lights all work as they should. I might go back to my friends cluster and check if it is the 21w filament illuminating at the lower wattage as I didn't specifically check to see which of the two elements illuminated with side lights.

Thanks again.

is it an estate or a hatch?  They use different bulbs you see...

Mine and my friends are both hatch backs. His is an 08 model.
