Changing gearbox oil. How and what oil to use.

Featured Replies

I think my gearbox oil could do with a change. The VRS is 14 years old and done 170000 miles and imo could do with it.

My question is this.. Where the heck is the filler? I found the security spline drain plug but having taken the battery box and air box filter box off the other week could not see a filler plug for love nor money.

Once the filler plug is found, do I need any further tools to fill it or is it just a case of pouring it jn like engine oil.

One other thing, the other year I remember seeing a thread about a good not very expensive gearbox oil to use but can't remember what its called. Does anyone know if the a good oil out there that doesn't cost the earth?

Thanks.

For the six-speed you need 75W80 IIRC, the fully synthetic VAG stuff is not that expensive.

You don't need to change it, just check it's full, the level will have dropped a bit by now.

Fair enough, but I'm guessing I need access the the filler to check the level which brings me back to my original question.... any clues on where to find it??

It's on one side of the gearbox about halfway up, remove it, squirt oil in until it starts to run back out, replace plug, job done.
