Engine Oil

Featured Replies

Hello

Can anyone advise what engine oil I should use on my octavia 2 for caribbean climate?

thanks

You'll need to say what year, diesel or petrol, engine code / size will help. What does the owners manual recommend? There will be a section at the back covering engines and engine oil.

thank you Client

it's a BSF engine, 1.6, 2006, I don't have the manual at present, however, I think the manual recommends VW501/502, our temperatures here are usually bet. 30-34 C.

the manufacturer recs. Shell Helix, as on the engine bay.

@torro - Well, based on those temperatures, I'd still use the VAG501/2 oil, but go for the higher hot viscosity number.

Also use the right G12++ anti-corrosion additive, not to stop the coolant freezing, but to keep the cooling system clean, and maximise the system heat transfer to the radiator.

but what viscosity number do you think I should use?

thanks

@torro - I honestly think that the viscosity is less important than the detergents and stability modifiers that make an oil meet, say, VAG 502.00. Given where you live, I'd look for the highest "hot" number (in, say 10W30 that's the 30) that also carried the VAG standard number for the engine. Since you mention Shell Helix I presume you can get it locally to you (I actually can't get it on the island I live on) and I'd be entirely happy to use it,

oh yes, we've got shell, mobil, liquimoly, castrol, pentosin, people really love their cars here lol

thank you for your advice, really appreciate it!

@torro - Well, of those, I'd happily use any of Castrol, Mobil or Shell, whichever has the VAG code you want and the highest hot viscosity given the Caribbean climate. Liqui Moly I'd associate with being an additive rather than an oil and Pentosin I've never heard of (which just means it's not common in Europe).

@Torro

As your climate is similar to ours in Greece I recomend you to use 10w-40 oils. I used to use them in my previous MK1 (1U) Octavia 1.6 (2002) with a BFQ engine which is quite similar to yours and never had any issues.

....And change it frequently. Frequent oil (And filter) changes are the best way to preserve the engine!

You wouldn't want to keep using the same oil, over and over,  to cook your food, after all!
