Fuel tank fuel level gauge

Featured Replies

Hi

Just filled up my fabia with fuel (petrol) after it had 1/4 tank left.

Problem is the now I've filled up the gauge remained at 1/4 full and mileage range was at 60 miles.

The gauge has crept from 1/4 to the 3/8 mark after 9 mile journey after 20 mins , at this rate the gauge will show full after 45 miles or another 100 mins.

My question is can the fuel gauge level sensor be changed. Or anyone think it could be another reason for fault.

Regards

Ken

Oh well no responses, booked in at local garage to resolve.

Hi, just logged on....  Sometimes they do this but not regularly. They sometimes tell you you have say, 50 miles of fuel left, which drops rapidly to 5 or 10 but can go up again. Usually it corrects itself after being turned off and on again a while later. Might even be worth disconnecting/re-connecting the battery for a while. I am assuming this is the digital gauge, with the descending bars, down to the fuel pump light.

I think it will most likely self correct but a you have booked it in already, perhaps they will shed some light on the issue.

Have left the car overnight with no difference went a for a run and no difference. It's not digital bars it's an analogue dial. As it showing 1/4 full and 50 mile range after fill up 33litres still showed 1/4 full and 50 mile range. But guage did creep up to 5/16 full and 85 mile range where it stayed . Was going try to disconnect the fuel sensor, but it is tight fit and would not budge.

Thanks for comments,I'll wait to what the garage say.

Ok, Sorry. Diff display to mine. Although disconnecting the battery might have helped if its electronic, if its an old fash, floating sensor in tank, it may have been damaged/semi filled with fuel.

Quick look in Haynes seems they do have a floating device and it does mention fuel ingress can affect it. Not to say this is the problem, though. The pump/sender appears to be a combined unit, under an access panel beneath the rear seat squab. If you are unsure about these things, the battery removal/refit cannot do any harm with the exception of losing the time and the edu needing to "Re-learn"  the fuelling etc, which it does as you drive.

Spoke with the garage and the fuel level sensor and the fuel pump are one of the same. If it does need changing it needs recalibrating so we will do an assessment on Friday to determine the course of action.
