...when a motoring organisation is bought out by aa insurance company?

Not really. The main service that both aa and RAC have always provided - breakdown recovery - is a form of insurance. You pay a "premium" called a membership fee and for that they will arrange to rescue you when you break down. In fact many insurance companies now provide breakdown cover.

I am actually just about old enough when the AA and RAC still acted like clubs (patrol men on motorbikes would salute all members - thats why you had your badge showing. But they havent really been like that for many years now.
