Driving with boot open.

Featured Replies

I need to pick up some furniture in the MK3 hatch. Now she's big but I still think I might struggle to get it fully in. Wouldn't be an issue in previous cars as I would just Bungee the lid down an away we go.

Bit concerned about doing this with the electric boot, anyone had any experience with this? Is there a way to disable it temporarily?

Thanks Chaps

Press the button to close it as it gets close to the item, press it again to stop.

perhaps put some packing in between to pad it. How far is the journey

It's only 25miles... I did think about that but then was concerned about the amount of pressure on the struts if it was being held in a slightly raised position

Hire or borrow a van. Could be cheaper than fixing the electric boot opener.

Or cheaper might be finding a 'man with a van'.

I´ve driven with the boot partly open many times (Combi with electric tailgate), and it went fine.

As above, I've left it open a few times and no problems with it (hatch).  In fact, I find the electric boot quite useful for transporting bulky items as you can vary the height and it keeps things more secure, rather than either having the hatch open fully or trying to physically tie it down.  The few times I've done it has been for shorter journeys though and I avoid placing any major force between the hatch and whatever I'm transporting which I think is where you might damage the struts.
