Automatic gear shift what does the + and - mean at the side of my shift lever

Edited by Razzertrevor

Hi these are for the manual operation of the DSG; push forward / pull back to change up or down. To engage push  the DSG lever to the side and move as required. I find that manual is beneficial in slow moving traffic~30-40mph  you can keep the revs up the DSG shifts up too early in my view. You will also see on the MFD D for auto S for auto Sport mode, higher revs before changes, and just the numbers for manual mode. Also in manual mode when the engine revs drop when slowing for junctions etc the DSG will shift down, this is a little jerky but still useful if you forget you are in manual mode it will also shift up at the redline too, hope this helps.

Thanks I will try this tomorrow only bought it on Saturday first auto I've ever had and it's taking some getting used to but I agree it's changing up in slow moving traffic and it seems to labour so thanks for help.

yes. If you have the manual for the car have a read through the section on the DSG gearbox, as there are a few quirks that make it different to drive than a 'normal' automatic.

99% of the time you will probably put it in D and just leave it there.....very clever gearboxes

DSG is great :) I have 4x4 and will never again buy car without DSG nor 4x4 ;)

You can switch between "N" and "D" without pressing the button anytime - but only when car is moving.

To switch to "R" and "P" you need to press button - of course do it only when stationary ;)

Never switch to "N" when coasting - slowing down - let the engine to slow down - you'll save brakes and fuel ;)

And most important thing - as you have TDI - chip or re-map it ;)

Given that the DSG box will usually shift from D1 to D2 as soon as the car starts moving so having the manual option is useful for keeping it between first and second in slow moving traffic.  Another option that I use is to flick it into Sport 'S' mode and this will generally hold first gear (and the other gears as well of course) for longer.
