Good run home

Featured Replies

Good run down from Glasgow to Lincoln despite the usual jams. Thank you Tom Tom for steering me past 45 mins of traffic jams. No difference from Normal to Eco mode even with air-con running.

Very impressive - mind if I ask what route, out of curiosity?

Yes agreed very good MPG, I recently got 43. something on a return trip to Halifax from Stafford, our wonderful 50MPH average speed limit roadworks helped me with that though.

Went to see our daughter tick off a 'bucket list' item of jumping out a perfectly good aircraft from 14,000 feet at the weekend.

1.4tsi and our cruise back of 310 km at 90 kph average and showing 5.1L/100 (approx. 190miles/56mph/55.4mpg). No special effort just used cruise control most of the way and stuck to speed limits except when overtaking.

The 'since refuel' display was showing 745km travelled 180km to refuel and 5.5L/100.

Have not refuelled it yet and on 780km the wife is now complaining that it is only showing 130km to refuel back in the 'burbs.

I don't think her exhibition of range anxiety bodes well for any future EV.

As a by the way  noted that my daughter's Golf Mk5 GTI was showing a long term average consumption of 7.1L/100 (40mpg) which I thought was pretty good for a high mileage car.

Had my economy in that range a few times on long distances, even after the remap.

I found that you unfortunately have to stay around 70mph to achieve it - any more and it drops a fair bit, especially above 80.

Sorry to take so long to reply Gaz. A66 Scotch corner is horrible so decided to go via M74 to M6 M65! M62 etc via Leeds onto A1 at Doncaster/Sheffield and A17. Tom Tom was great, no actual stoppages but diverted through Bury I think so avg speed a bit down. In reality we sat at 70 true speed for 70% of the journey. You couldn't go much faster due to traffic. The TSI is slightly better than my old TFSI VRS.

It's quite difficult to do > 75Mph without either hitting other traffic or setting yourself up for a speeding fine, in Scotland as you may know, the speed vans sit on the motorway bridges, I don't do enough trips up there to remember where the bridges are and there's been one or two on each trip I've made. I am sure lots of people do sit at > 80 but I also noticed a lot of people sitting at 72-75 true speed, some of them annoyingly in the middle lane for miles even when the inside lane as empty. It's like they've switched off their brains.

The 1.4 is a very good engine, my son had a Leon 1.4 TSI also and I was impressed by its power and economy, obviously different roads etc and engine size but the point remains, modern petrols are reasonably efficient and a good alternative to diesel depending on personal circumstances such as finance and driving patterns.
