Horn not working

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My 2002 Estate seems to have a prominent lack of horn at the moment.

When I either button, the relay clicks but that's about it. The fuse is fine too. What should I be looking at next?

Cheers

THE HORN!!

:wall:, or I feel as if I am. As folks still carry on working by trial and error with electrical faults

Think of an electrical circuit as a water supply to a tap, with several taps on the pipe along the way. If no water at the end, a logical person would possibly start at one end and open taps to find where there's no water. A more logical person would open the first tap and if supply then go halfway along the pipe .Water- carry on to the next half way point . No water -go back halfway.

With this one- relay is clicking, BUT is relay giving out enough power to operate horn. Could be bad contacts. Or a duff horn. Simplest way without test kit, is to wire something like brake bulb in series with the horn ( in case of S/C horn) and try it across battery. Horn works- try it without bulb. OK- suspect relay.

It's just simple logic and a process of logical elimination . As Sergai says -"SIMPLES".

I've got a multimeter, I was just wondering more if there were any common faults with the horns on these. Along the lines of the load sense wire rubbing through or the horns being prone to being filled with gunge.

If not, I'll have to get under the car and do some good old fashioned troubleshooting from end to end. Where abouts are the horns? Am I correct in thinking they're accessible from under the car behind the front bumper?

Just be aware ,that you can check voltage at horn end, but without horn drawing current, then any bad contacts on relay will not show up .

Most modern meters draw little current, so even if relay contacts are dodgy, meter will still see 12 ( or about)

You really need to check voltage across horn ,with horn in circuit. Get 12v ( or about) at horn, with no sound and horn is duff. Get less and it's time to test horn on battery. Horn ok=relay U/S.

From Haynes- horns are located under front of left hand bumper.

Might be simpler if horn(s) easy to take off to remove and test on battery . Work- you're looking for a dodgy contact ( possibly relay) .No work, then duff. Bear in mind that the cable/horn contact might be the problem. I has something similar the other week - a dip bulb out. Turned out to be a bad bulb contact ,with the connector fusing.
