Fabia - Six inch split in windscreen

Featured Replies

Outer lamination only, drivers side, horizontally from pillar edge towards centre and only 4 days before first MOT and a week and a half before expiry of warranty. B*gger ! Split has not increased in length since it first happened

Motorway driving at the time (M40/M25 junction), but road ahead was clear of traffic !

Does any one have knowledge/experience of spontaneous breakages ? I can't find the impact point on the outer surface.

Also, does anyone know what's legally allowable ?

Is a split of this size repairable ?

Can anyone advise on SKODA approved windscreen replacement companies - the customer service help line and local dealer did want to commit themselves.

I'm concerned about the possibilty of invalidating the 10 year paint and body warranty by using a glass supplier not approved by SKODA

A few years ago it was anything bigger than 10mm in the area directly above the steering wheel and 15mm in the rest of the swept area by the blades.

I don't think it's changed but someone else might know better than I do.

Repairs are usually carried out for small chips but six inches sounds too big to me so it will probably be a new screen.

I've got no idea about the warranty but I'd guess RAC Autowindscreens or Autoglass would be approved by Skoda - they are certainly approved by insurance companies.

Check your insurance, they should be able to provide a new windscreen for about £50/£60.

Repair - no chance with that regardless of which part of the screen but just a standard job for normal screen firms. Autoglass did mine last year. No problems - £50 excess paid - insurance did the rest.
