Nice looker shame about the rest

Featured Replies

I have a 66 plate sportline tsi with some 6000 miles covered so far.

Great looking car but im concerned that build quality is 'lacking'.

Main concern is the dsg. 1st to 2nd gear shifts are usually felt with a shove as shifts from 2nd to 3rd are usually felt hesitant then a slight shove as the gear engages. I ran a dsg (diesel) prior to this from new and was so smooth compared to the current. Any suggestions? Faulty? Damage? Re-programme required? Normal operation?

Stop start kicks in before car has stopped which is downright dangerous. It appears to work more with pedal pressure and not vehicle motion.

Rear brake discs never 'clean' up thus the working surface always has rust lines. They look like they are worn already. Again is this normal?

Car has a sunroof. The interior control panel in the roof lining creaks more than a seized up wooden gate. Again is this normal?

Centre armrest bins creak as above and appear to have been made by the same grade of plastic from airfix. Normal?

So much for this being the companies luxury car and flagship.

It will the visiting the dealer to get these resolved hopefully.

Otherwise it looks an amazing car but looks are not enough.

Don't have a DSG so can't comment but I think you're just unlucky and got a 'Friday car'.  My Sportline has been rattle and creak free in it's first 9K miles and remains just as smooth and solid as the day I collected it.   By far the most refined VAG group car I've had.

I did have a replacement pano roof on my Passat CC and it initially creaked like hell and the sun blind would rattle but it just needed realigning.  The roof is pretty heavy and it's normal for them to drop after initial installation, or so I was told.  After it was checked and adjusted, I never had any further issues.

Have you contacted the supplying dealer to have anything investigated?   If the car is new then there's a 6K miles limit on any initial snagging after that the "Sorry, Sir that's fair wear and tear"  stance is adopted.

I have the same car (220ps), same mileage. My transmission is smooth as silk. I drive it like a big red bus, rarely resorting to jack rabbit starts. Do a search on this forum for "dogbone mount insert" if you seek solutions/other ideas.

The stop/start takes some getting used to, but you've sussed the pedal pressure aspect. At rush hour roundabouts, I tend to disable it.

My brakes are good and look unworn. Others have commented on premature wear. Again, do a search here.

The sunroof: after driving on some particularly rough country tracks, I did get a rattle from the roof mounted control panel. It's quiet on a motorway, but rough roads can cause a rattle and if I hold my hand on it, the rattle stops. It's on my list for my October first service.

No complaints about the armrest.

My DSG is lovely and smooth. Other probs ? Try having a search on the forums. Most faults covered in other threads.

Just out of interest didn't you check the quality of the materials before your purchased the car ?

I went over one in the showroom with a fine tooth comb.... I could see immediately where the quality wasn't say upto Audi standards. Carpet and some plastics but you get what you pay for and the Superb is fantastic value especially in 280 guise.

Thanks for the info.

I didnt particulary go over every detail with a fine tooth comb as i sort of expected some inherent quality rise over my previous octavia elegance.

Its sad to say for a 10k price rise given i have a lot more tech and comfort in the car the quality has not increased in my opinion.

The dsg only really shoves when shifting from 1st to 2nd almost like im totally off the throttle then the gas is applied, as said prior nothing like the 6 speed dsg that was in my octavia.

The soft start doesn't appear to work like the diesel s/s. As said kicks in way to early to the point i was slowing to a mini roundabout turning left to give way and the s/s kicked in. I could not turn the steering wheel as i approached the give way due to s/s. Not impressed.

Hoping the dealer can sort this out.

Are you using 95 ron Unleaded or 97 or 99 ron Super Unleaded?

Maybe try changing who's or where you buy and see if any change is felt.

Re the S/S, I have the exact same issue in my 150TDi and I just disable it now as it dangerous as you say, especially coming up to traffic lights with pedestrians around.  Dealer couldn't do anything with it and besides, in the diesel, I also don't like the unrefined restart with S/S so I just hit that button as soon as I sit in now.  The DSG doesn't sound quite right and I'd get it back to the dealer.  Get them to look at the sunroof as well but also search on here as there have been reports of similar issues.  If I have a passenger who is also leaning on the centre arm rest, I do notice a slight creaking but doesn't really happen other than that however, I agree that the build quality in that area isn't quite up there.  There will be some compromises versus a more expensive premium car but thankfully most are in the lower level plastics.

I have heard on here that some people have complaints with the S3. My Superb has been trouble, rattle and creak free since It was registered in May 2016.  It has a sun roof which is quiet, and the DSG is very smooth.

I don't like the stop-start and tend to disable it as soon as I start the car.

As far as rear brake rusting is concerned, Its an issue with many modern cars in my experience. Most modern cars do most of their braking on the front wheels, and unless you habitually brake hard and do it frequently, you do not engage the rear brakes enough to clean off the rust properly. I have had to have rear brakes replaced before because of this rusting effect.

In respect to build quality, I think it is very good. I will say that materials used are not as good as an Audi for example, but that car costs a lot more. Looking at other cars that are sold into comparable market levels I think the Superb is great value for money.

I will push the issues onto the dealer.

Naturally im disappointed as this was a step up to the brands premium model.

Can i ask what dsg owners define as smooth? We all have differing perceptions but even my other half notices the jerky shifts and somtimes changes gear then hesitates for some reason. And she is not into cars at all.

Second skoda now second with potential issues from new. Great car to drive and nice place to sit but gearbox is a let down and a £35k car should not creak so much already.

I can only tell that mine is shifting by looking at the rev counter but I think mine has the wet clutch(s) system.  My only criticism of dsg is unfair and that is its lack for foresight.  All autos suffer this though.

I have had a few experiences of the much maligned throttle lag causing jerkiness.  Especially when you don't have a lot of time to pull into traffic.  You instinctively push harder in mild panic, suddenly the car shoots off and you lift suddenly.  I've had the car a week and I'm already driving around it.

Definitely worth bringing it up your issues with the dealer though.

@dg360 I tend to drive around in with the box in eco mode and when required, either roundabouts or slip roads where I would like a quicker response, i just nudge back into sport and feed in the throttle smoothly.  The car then pulls hard as you like, gentle accell or boot full, once established with the traffic flow drop back into eco and pootle along again with the little smile inside knowing the car can respond as well as you demand.

I don't have anything like your descriptions. Changes 4,5,6 in either direction are almost imperceptible in everyday driving. I am aware of changes 1,2 3 but nothing that I would call rough or jerky. On the rare occasions that I can or want to use all the power then  the change is at higher revs and is obviously noticeable. I guess that might be perceived a jerky but most definitely not as jerky as a manual change in a similarly powered car.

As to the throttle lag I have never felt that either. I do however not use S/S and often wonder whether the control system for that may be part of the cause of the issue for those who feel this at roundabouts etc.

It is frustrating for you but give the dealer a chance to sort the problems before discounting the car.; it is an amazing car for the money.

Before we ordered we gave the showroom cars a good dose of looking at and the one we got on loan from the dealer was tested thoroughly.

We concluded that the seat material and comfort was fine and as good as we had previously had.

The interior plastics were without doubt better than anything we had previously had.

For the money the kit was staggering, still finding things I was not aware of 5 months later.

Road and wind noise were very low compared to other cars (especially the Octavia).

If I had to be picky the only item I could find to criticise was the quality of the carpet. Its no worse than my previous car (Seat Leon) but I did expect it to be a bit better. Its way better than Kia fit on their flahip models but a little disappointing.

Lets be honest, no car is perfect but for the £19000 I paid for a brand new 1.4 TSI 150 with extras you could not find better value.

Gave the car benefit of the doubt and considered my driving technique. After a 500 mile round trip on holiday the gearbox certainly is not right in the first 3 gears. Sometimes is smooth if i use a lot of throttle but for everday driving and slow speed its hesitant and jerks.

This car has the 6 speed DSG so assume its wet clutch? If so i had a 6sp wet clutch in my Octavia diesel which in that the gearbox was flawless.

At times the issue is continuous and at others intermittent. Doesnt appear to be running temperature related or anything to do with the hapless stop start system. Could it just be buggered? I would find it difficult to understand why an octavia should drive better for £10k less in price.

I think you need to visit a dealer to get these issues either resolved or confirmed as 'normal' once and for all. Your experiences don't seem to reflect what the majority of others report, which hopefully means it's a problem that can be fixed. No-one here can add any real insight remotely, and that means everyone is just speculating.

sounds like an issue with the mechatronics.......

I thought the same.  I had a 2005 Octavia which was affected by the dreaded early generation mechatronic woes.  If it feels like you're a learner driver and the car is intermittently/randomly  'kangarooing' in the low gears then it's worth getting it checked.

Car booked into dealer this monday. Hopefully not the first of many visits which plagued the first year of my octavia.

Another loan car then. I guess that wont be a superb sportline.
