External temperature sensor fault?

Featured Replies

The temperature display on my dash was sitting quite happily at about 15 degrees this afternoon, then it started dropping all of a sudden, the low temperature alarm went off at 4 degrees, and it's currently sitting at minus 9 degrees...

Has anyone ever had this problem before, is the external temperature sensor easy to get to, and is it an easy fix? Thanks.

Hi broona,

It could be a defective ambient temp sensor- cheapo ones are c.£5, but my original sensor was fine. Or it could start working if you go over a bump/ a hill crest...damp days will make it go off on one too. Mine worked fine through summer but an early morning trip in the mist & fog made it fail again...

Mine turned out to be a split in wire to the sensor, so I spliced in a new bit of wire on 02 Sep, by 04 Sep it failed again. It was a tiny crack that allowed water/ salt into it and the copper in that half of the cable went black- it's being going on for MONTHS!

It seems that the damaged cable must extend into the wiring loom- I took too long to investigate & repair it properly, my next step is to try and replace more wire.

You can access the sensor from the front LH black plastic trim, but to access the bits I need, I'll need to take the tray off, disconnect the fog light & horn, and tease out that part of the loom.

The whole thing is REALLY annoying...

Thanks for the reply, it went wonky for a couple of days, and now seems to be back to normal, fingers crossed it stays that way!

The new Seat Leon ST 300 Cupra I'm tempted by may make the sensor irrelevant though...
