My parents have the same package with BT and they're happy with it - although as a word of warning, the BT Smart Hub is utter garbage. They had a problem where it constantly rebooted and crashed - only to be told by BT support that there was a problem with the phone line / exchange / insert nonsensical excuse here and that they'd need to get an engineer out. In frustration, I got them set up with a proper ASUS router (http://amzn.eu/dDu2MGC) which is extremely stable and they haven't had any problems since - although it's perhaps a little bit overkill for their needs.

Not only that but the BT Home Hub/Smart Hub is aggressively managed by BT which can often mean daily reboots when they change a setting using the TR069 protocol - and if you're trying to download at the time then the download is aborted.

What package are you on from Virgin Media? They only offered 50Mbps when we moved in March...

BTW why is your WiFi slower than hardwired? If you use an 802.11ac WiFi access point (which has a speed capability of at least 1300Mbps) then WiFi should be no slower than even gigabit Ethernet.

The Broadband package is VIVID200.

It's a real shame to hear this - especially for an organisation that (at least used to) pride itself on the quality of its customer support team. It seems that there is a race to the bottom in terms of customer service provision for most utility companies - provide the bare minimum and just hope that everything runs smoothly. It's hard to measure the impact of good customer service on the bottom line

Says it all really!

Look after your customers or lose them.

But the bigger and greedier these big companies get, the worse they get, and the less they care.

Presumably there's no obligation for me to use the BT one? I'll see how I go with it, and what model it is.

Correct, no obligation to use the BT router.

All the things that Plusnet told me could be an issue...... Why should it interest me? Their problem, not mine.  I pay for it. I don't want THEIR problems.

If there is a problem with the physical connection between your master socket and the telephone exchange, then that problem will still be there when you move to BT. Fingers crossed that's not the case though!

Cheers my friend.

Catch up soon as out of UK for a few days.

Thanks for your valuable help. :)

No worries - happy to help further if issues persist with BT.

Happy trails!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, now changed over to BT Infinity Fibre, having dumped Plusnet, and the difference has been like stepping from the stone age into 2017.

We've got the very latest BT Smarthub, which seems to be more than adequate,  and I have also installed 4 brand new colour coded Cat 6 cables from the gigabit ethernet connections to our PC and to 3 other places where we tend to use the  laptop, leaving wifi for the mobile phones and tablets. All running very well, and SO SO much faster.

I moved the position of the router when we got back from Switzerland last week. But prior to the changeover, noticed no difference in the Plusnet delivery of service, at a thoroughly miserable 0.27mbs.... so have to say it, they aren't an outfit I would advise anyone to use. Service  from them was shocking.

Glad to hear that there's been a dramatic improvement!

Thanks fella. Yeah, the work I did over the weekend to prepare for the switchover yesterday has paid well.

Don't think I'll need the Asus Router, but, if I do, I'll get one. Interestingly, it seems the BT hub has 7 aerials within it.....impressive.

I have computer shut down..ie go to power options & chose shut down....

Computer cam only update when I fire it back up..I have no set time for the updates, but  "active hours is 8am to 5pm"..so it can look for updates in this time...if switched on..

That's not how active hours works.

. It's the hours you DON'T want updates installed because you'll be using it.

Outside these hours, if on it'll update.

I've disabled automatic updates entirely on my PC using the registry edits at https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/ - seems to do the trick for me, and I just manually check for updates every couple of weeks.

I understand why Microsoft hide the option away, but it would be nice to have a proper "let me decide what my PC is going to do" button in the control panel...
