1.6 BSE oil consumption

Featured Replies

Hello to the community!

My car is a 2006 vw jetta with the 1.6 bse engine, also used in octavia mk2.

Car has 152000km on it right now and through the years it has been fairly reliable. The only problems were a leaking valve cover gasket and a failed a/c compressor, both solved for under 300euros. Car has had a hard life with lots of redline driving, but it has been maintained with 15.000km oil changes with 5w30 and sometimes 5w40 oil grade.

Till the previous oil change at ~135.000kms car was using no oil at all. Maybe a little bit, but it wasn't even noticable. During the procedure of removing the plastic engine cover I damaged and cracked the plastic guide of the oil dipstick. I used some tape to fix it temporarily before I could get another one to change it. The dipstick wasn't really secured on the guide, but I thought that it wasn't so important. In this oil change I put castrol 5w30 full synthetic. After about 3000kms the oil warning light came up for the first time in the car's life. Topped up and came on after 3000km again. Meanwhile I totally forgot about the broken plastic guide and just topped it up. For the next oil change I decided to use another oil brand, because I thought that the oil was at fault. So at ~148000kms I used liqui molly 4200 5w30 oil along with their ceratec additive and replaced the broken plastic guide. Now at 152000kms light came on again.

I searched the net and found that if the dipstick isn't well secured, a vacuum situation is induced in the crankcase and pcv valve is not working correctly. Oil is guided to the intake and burned in the cylinders. My mechanic said that it is normal for the car to start consuming oil at this mileage, but I find it strange that for 135000 hard driven kms with 15000km intervals no oil was used and suddenly after the broken guide incidence it started using ~1l /3000kms. I believe my pcv valve is damaged and is causing this mess.

What do you people think? Do your 1.6s consume any oil? Also I would like to ask the part number of the pcv valve in these engines, because I couldn't find clear information on the net.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to describe the situation in the best possible way. Thanks for your attention and have a nice day!

On turbo TSI engines where the PCV system is combined with a fine oil separator and there are various valves and bypasses employed, a failed unit can lead to oil consumption. As far as the 1.6 BSE MPI engine, I am not really familiar with any of the set up at all I am afraid. You could replace the PCV and see if it improves.

It does seem rather co-incidental to come on like that. You would expect the usage to have built up over a period if it is wear. Maybe a wet and dry compression test would give you an idea of bore / piston wear too.

Thanks for your input!

I can't accept that I took out the right amount of oil in that oil change and then suddenly engine wear happened and it started consuming that much oil. It just doesn't add up.

I can also hardly find any oil consumption threads about 1.6 bse on the net and it's an engine that was used in many cars of the vag group. It seems to be one of their most reliable units. Gutless but reliable.

Hello Thanasis (geia sou Θανάση)

I have the same BSE MPI engine in a VW CADDY van - I do agree pretty reliable and strong/elastic enouph for its range...

Now 211K and when was at 120K it was transformed into LPG fuel system.

As far as I remember From around at 120K was starting to consume some more oil and generally it was since then 1 litre per 10K km.

Its the same until today I can say which clock shows 211K and I think very normal.

Just have in mind my friend that Greece climate/environment is not suitable to keep your engine oil for 15K km....too much...

7,5-10k km and from the moment you use to drive a lot in the red line 10K is also too much...

For this occasion now as suddenly started consuming such quantity oil it most probably is the valve pcv...

Hope you find a solution soon with this..

I know it was a mistake keeping the oil for 15K in the past. I have now decided to lower the intervals at max 10K. Either way it seems really strange that oil consumption started suddenly out of nowhere.

If it was 1l/10K km like yours, it wouldn't really bother me. I will try to see if there is a solution to totally delete pcv valve as well as secondary air pump. I know there is a way on the 1.8 20vt engine, which also has SAI.

Have you faced any problems with your caddy? I always hear that gearbox bearings fail, but mine seems to hold up really well till now  at 152K. No strange noises. And I don't baby it at all. It has seen a lot of fast shifts and launches. My clutch feels like new and it's not slipping even after 10+ continuous launches. Overall I'm very happy with the car, having in mind that it isn't maintained religiously and just can stand the abuse.

Hello Thanasi,

Overall good reliability except the below repairs in stated km.:

-  150000: gearbox/dif bearings repair (almost all 1.6 BSE do suffer-you're lucky yet nothing..).

-  125000: new synchro (cam) belt together with water pump (water pump had no problem but just in case..)

-  one headlight replaced with new in past due to problem in flashing lights were getting sorted internally (the other one was repaired its wires..).

-  1-2 spark plugs.

-  It's been a few weeks the elastic joints of both front and back shafts have been replaced.

-  1 or 2 wheel bearings.

That's all I remember and main things.

Hope are of help.

Cheers

I have just bought a car with a BSE engine and the dipstick oil tube was blowing in the wind and came out with the dipstick. I changed it for a cheap pattern one and when the mechanic who fitted it said it wasn’t a very good fit.

its using about 1 litre if oil per 400 miles!!!  Could this be a PCV VALVE/ dipstick tube problem.

drives ok. Have I been sold a crap car?

TIA

Hello @Thanasis3582,

Do you find out the root of the problem with oil consumption?

I have facing the same situation on my 1.6 , 102hp CHGA, so I trying to find solution.

Thanks.
