Gearbox endplate oil leak

Featured Replies

Ok so don't really know the right terminology, I've got an oil leak from the passager side end of the gearbox on my 1.9tdi mk1 Fabia.

the under tray is quite stained on this side of the engine bay, although no significant puddles, just "wetting" of the collected dirt.

i've been keeping an eye on it for the past few weeks, having cleaned up that side of the gearbox.  It seems to be leaking from the gasket on the underside of what I'd describe as the "end plate" bolted onto that side of the gearbox. (Painted black pressed mild steel plate, not cast)

Topped up the gearbox oil today with around 400mls, I'll be keeping an eye on the level.

gut feeling is that it's not worth worrying about, I've pinched up the bolts tighter on the underside edge of the "end plate".

anyone else suffered the same thing? Any idea if it's worth sorting?

ta in advance

Fit a new gasket behind the endplate. Or use a silicone gasket sealant. Those bolts should not be ovetightened with the risk of them snapping or damaging the threads. They should also be replaced each time you remove them. IIRC they are 5nm + 1/4 turn??

I would get it sorted as 400ml is alot of oil to be loosing. thats 1/4 of the total capacity so you wont be doing your 5th gear any good running on low oil.

Sounds like it might be worth sorting then......especially if it's just a few bolts and a new gasket (after draining the gearbox)

although, i I did think/read the gearbox took 2.5l of oil, so 400ml is more like 1/8 than 1/4? Hence I wasn't all that worried.

i'll be keeping an eye on it as I don't really know what duration/mileage this 400ml was lost over.

No its 2 litres capacity so 400ml is quite a bit

1/5 then

Sounds like I'll have a go at doing it, as it's planned to be doing some miles

When i I phone around for the parts (including the replacement bolts) is it the "end plate" or is there a proper name ?

ta

'End plate' is the right name.

My Sdi gearbox leaked from one of the joints about 150ml every 5k or so. I just kept topping it up.

Be aware the first time you fill it you will probably put a lot more oil in than the factory did.

I did 120,000 with it like that.

Looked to me like the gearbox topup plug hadn't been out in a LONG time, if ever.  So I don't know how many of the 70k miles it's been leaking for.

The car was also jacked up at the front, as the gearbox filler is on the front, I suspect I've over filled it a little and it probably hadn't lost all of the 400ml.

im in 2 minds although if it's not a big job, I'll probably go for it at the nxt oil change.
