What sort of mileage do things start going wrong?

Featured Replies

Looking at Octavia Vrs's on Autotrader and Ebay and lots seem to get sold at about 60k or70k miles. What should I be aiming for when looking at a car. Is it at this mileage that things start going wrong? If so what are common faults etc.

The one I'm, looking at is a 02 plate vrs in silver with 71k miles for

Coil pack failures are a known fault but should be fine on an '02 car.

Anti-roll bar links can start to knock slightly and the anti-roll-bar bushes can creak. Both of these are things to look for from 40k miles+ Neither of these are serious but could give you a lever to reduce the price ;)

My car has done 94,000 miles (18k with a remap) and in the last 2000 miles has the following replaced/fixed; rear wheel bearings, MAF sensor, vacuum hose, petrol hose leak.

I had new front and rear brake discs/pads at 80k

The history provided by the previous owner and their dealers computer shows the car has been without fault until I bought/remapped it ;)

At 71k you should be thinking of a cambelt change (most have it done at 75k) and take the opportunity to change the water pump at the same time.

Has a full skoda service history and new pads and tyres all round. Not sounding too bad!

If I were you I'd budget £300+ for a cambelt and water pump change at 75k miles and possibly some wheel bearings at £150+ per corner in the next 10k miles.

ARB links are very cheap, ARB bushes are cheap in themselves but expensive to fit. If it creaks, knocks on slow speed bumps and turns budget £200 to get them all sorted

If I were you I'd budget

My vRS has just rolled over 80k, of which i've done 50k of it and around 40k of that with a remap.

The cars great and can't really fault it, failings have been snapped front spring, radiator mountings and ARB bushes and linkages.

Also had new exhaust middle section as the exhaust mountings tend to fail, coil packs and a new boost hose all of which were fixed by the dealer when the car was still under warranty.

Had my cambelt done at the last service (72k) along with the water pump,

Good point - radiator mountings tend to start squeeking. Slam the front door hard with the bonnet open and your assistant at the fron tof the car will be able to hear the rad mounts squeek. Easily fixed by wedging pipe lagging or rubber under the rad.

Do the cars tend to lose performance? I drove one that had 40k miles and went like a rocket compared to one I drove that had done 120k.

Some nice points here guys. VERY useful, keep em coming! :D

129000, I put a rod through the block :(

Owned my one from new,2 and a half years ago,now has 71K miles on the clock.

Had it re-mapped at 10K miles and it's been no problem since then.

Have modified it further,FMIC,Full Exhaust,TIP,Neuspeed F+R ARB,Audi S3 Upper and Lower Strut braces and converted to LPG/Dual Fuel 20K miles ago and its going fine.

Having the Cambelt changed at the next service in 3 weeks time, and at 80K it will need new Disc's and pads all round.

Its already had 2 set of pads on the front as it gets used for trackdays aswell.

Best car i've owned, only matched by the Mk2 Golf GTI 8V i had for 9 years and 150K miles!!!!!!

Enjoy it,and it won't be long before you start wanting to modify it!!!!!

In summary , it seems that it's fair to say that at 60k+ on a VRS you shouldn't expect any major drivetrain faults , but things like hoses , rubber mountings and suspension components will probably be starting to show signs of wear and could need attention.

I know at 74k my TDI is still mechanically sound but there are now a few odd noises starting to creep in which show that the car isn't quite as tight as it once was.

Cambelt should be done at 60k on the 1.8T

Well the dealer says it is only a visual inspection up to 110K and then changed at 120K.

So who's right?

And if that is the case Lummox i'll come over with Gerry one Saturday and you can change it for me,for cash!!!!! LOL

Just spoken to the owner of the car and the cam belt was changed at the last service. The next service is due in 3000 miles. Seeing as in the last year I've put only 4000 miles on my focus, thats not a problem. One slight hurdle.......the misses will only allow us to get a black one!

Matt

I think you'll find that most cars are sold on between 70k and 90k miles - not just Skodas.
