Variable servicing on mkIII

Featured Replies

Need some advice. Today I picked up my brand new Superb Sportline but I noticed straight away that the oil service is due in 9500 miles. When I ordered the car I made it clear to the dealer I wanted it on variable servicing. So the guys took it back to the workshop and told me they had plugged it in and reset it. So I checked again and the same mileage appears on the oil inspection. I said to the guys it still says the same. He said don't worry it's a fault with the software it will ask for an oil change in 18700 which is when the inspection is due. Has anyone else experienced this on there car who is on the variable service as if it's just me I will have to make a call to get this sorted out. My mileage is about 40k minimum a year so need to keep variable servicing on to keep my running costs lower otherwise it will be in and out the garage every 3 months.

I'd say give it a few days for the engine to run and the oil sensor to sort themselves out  as it may change after a long run or two.  If it's still the same after a few weeks then by all means go back to them and say for it to be done again.

This :)

Variable servicing is variable, hopefully the interval will increase if you do a few long motorway journeys.

The main reason for the post was just to see if anyone else has had the same thing happen on here as with every other car I've had on variable servicing has always started off around the 20k mark and dropped not increased but I'm happy to give it time.

When I got mine it was on standard servicing which I didn't realise until it popped up, so after the 10k service I got it put onto variable.  Been fine since, with services at around 29k and then 49k (albeit it was on 51.5k by the time it was serviced yesterday).  It's a company car so cost wasn't an issue, just hassle - I'm on around 32k a year and didn't want to keep taking it in!

Mine started on 20k, so you are asking a sensible question.

I'm off on a 200 mile journey tomorrow so I will see what it says once I have completed that.

I'm actually unsure myself about variable servicing.

My 2 fabias were both on fixed 10,000 mile services whereas my 2 Octavias were/are on variable.

I do around 14,000 miles a year, mostly on motorways if it is me driving, so I could still be having one service per year.

While it's nowhere near some of the miles some of you do, I'm not sure it is enough to really warrant variable servicing.

If just like to know people's thoughts on it.

When on variable I've never known the mileage to increase, only decrease.

Something sounds wrong.

It is true that the service intervals have got unnecessarily complicated on recent models.

It used to be pretty simple:

Fixed - 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is reached first.

Variable - up to 20,000 miles or 2 years, the car decides for itself when it needs fresh oil.

Fixed for lower annual mileage, arduous conditions (extreme climates, regular towing), or those who are happy to pay more for an increased chance of prolonged engine and turbo life.

Variable for higher annual mileage, regular motorway use and fleet ownership to keep running costs to a minimum.

Now they added various iterations of both plus the addition of a completely unnecessary inspection service.

All designed of course to get us into their dealer network as often as possible.

Just get the Principal Dealer to arrange a Qualified Technician to do a free Oil & Filter Change on your car even though new and to reset the Service Indicator.

If their Dealership has nobody that can operate the equipment they better get one.

After all someone there reset the car from its Transit Setting and changed it to Fixed Servicing because it never arrived on Fixed Servicing.
