2002 Octavia 1.6i "hickups"

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New here, I bought recently an oldie Octavia 1.6i (AVU engine) with 114.000 km's and I'm experiencing some issues with it, mainly some irregular idle and tendency to "hickup" when accelerating from a dead stop, mainly with lower revs, the engine wants to stall sometimes and then jumps and accelerate normally, when doing maneuvers in reverse it lacks a lot of power and almost have to floor it to move from a standstill...

There is also quite a bit of "pinging" when in load going just a bit uphill in lower revs, seems fuel starved, when the engine is cold it doesn't ping maybe because is getting more fuel I guess...? There is no check engine light though.

I already made some basic service and runned some premium gas with cleaning additive for the injectors, and recently exchanged a few things that might cure this erratic behavior but no luck:

-New oil and air filter

-New spark plugs, cables and coil pack (got a great deal on a new original Bosch)

-New MAF sensor (also found a new original one at a steal price so went ahead)

Next it to get a shop with VAGcom but my concern is as I don't have a check engine light probably they won't find anything...?

What do you guys think?

Many thanks in advance,

Cheers,

Luís Campos

@Campos "Pinging" I guess you mean "pinking", more properly called "pre-ignition"? That probably won't throw a CEL, but a proper diagnostic computer check might show that the ignition timing is out.

Alternatively, it can also be caused by low octane petrol; use a brand name "unleaded" (French 'essance sans plombe') and that might cure it, and/or coked up combustion chamber(s).

Cheers Ken,

Yep, correct it's pre-ignition, but it's not a bad petrol related issue I'm afraid, I run good quality BP gas, also made a full tank of premium 98 octane and I still get pinking, I'm starting to think I have a bad knock sensor but again...no CEL on :(

Well, it can be carbon build up as it was a lady's car...must check with someone who has a VAGcom.

Many thanks,

Hi guys,

Is there anyone who can let me know how to access the EGR mount screw that sits behind the pipes on this diagram? It's the screw next to screw #13, not shown on the diagram but it's on the opposite side of this #13:

I would like to clean the EGR just to make sure this is ok and rulled it out, but one of the screws is a pita to get, I'm guessing I'll have to lift the car and get under the exhaust manifold...?

Many thanks,

Luís
