Idiot needing advice

Featured Replies

Please dont laugh, but, how, and what is the best way to clean my green cotton filter?, The car was serviced at 9000 miles, and it has now done 14000, with an oil change imminent, so I presume the air filter will need looking at.

All my cars over the last 10 years have been dealer serviced (for warranty), but I presume that even for someone as mechanically inept as me this shouldn't kill me ?:o

you can use green cottons filter cleaning kit. Should be about

So I have got to talk to a spotty youth who knows less than me ! BAH!

thanks anyway:thumbup:

The cleaning kit comprises a washing solution and some oil. You don't really need the washing solution and can just use warm soapy water (I used washing up liquid).

To clean, knock off the bulk of the dirt from the filter and then rinse under the tap. This should get most of it off. Then fill a tray with the washing solution and leave the filter to soak for half an hour. Rinse thoroughly under the tap and then leave out to dry.

Once dry, apply a thin layer of oil over the filter and then dab dry with kitchen paper.

Now refit to car :D

The kit is available off the shelf in a lot of Halfords so no need to interact with the spotty oiks :D

I though that Green Filters were 'dry' and didn't use oil

From JabbaSports web site

"The Benefit of using the Green filter is the fact that they are dry filters with excessive oil tend to cause MAF sensors to fail over a period of time causing running issues and poor fuel economy".

Anyone confirm if they are oiled when you get it new?

Yes they are - it's the oil that traps the dirt :D

Ooeer, I've started summat 'ere!

I'm glad I'm officially an idiot!

Graham, Just leave it for now, it's only done 5K and should be good for another 5K.

I bet the stealers don't look at it until it's done over 20K.

40k to be exact

Have a look at one after 5k miles - you might be shocked how filthy it is!

Hmmm, why do Jabba state its a dry filter, ie non oiled, hence the comment about oil damaging MAFs.... I guess to point out that the Green filter won't do that as its not got any oil on it.

All a bit weird :)

I think I'll just take it out, dust it off, and put it back, if only for peace of mind to say that I've looked at it, and it seems ok!

He probably knew how to clean a Green cotton filter ;)

A quick google turned this up from the Green cotton filter site:

Green cleaning fluid is formulated to degrease and clean the cotton gauze of the filter. Please note that no other fluid should be used in Green filters as it may invalidate the lifetime guarantee.

Green filter oil penetrates the cotton gauze and remains in the fabric of the cotton, helping the filter to trap dirt, dust and moisture sucked into the engine bay.

It's not oil-free, just hasn't got as much oil on it as some other cotton filters.

Deffo need to clean it regularly 5k-7k at the most, it was filthy

Best ask them that, but I do know you have to re-oil it after cleaning which suggests it's not a "dry filter" ;)

Could I trust my dealer to clean it properly anyway methinks?. for the sake of £30 I may as well buy a new one and have peace of mind, as the last service was a main dealer one, thereafter, follow greens specific advice, as I will be keeping the car for at least 2 years.

The car runs fine, I just like to keep on top of things I may add !

I've actually purchased a second green filter so I can drop it in whilst I sort out cleaning the other one. It gives me about 5k miles (ie 10 weeks tops) to get the cleaning done which just about works for me  - otherwise your car might be off the road for a bit.

Alternatively you could keep the paper filter and drop that in whilst you clean/dry/re-oil the green filter.

When the 40k service gets done it's most likely to be done by a tuner this time around, just can't afford to go back to the dealer at more than double (!!) the cost in my area.
