Brakes

Featured Replies

Hi all just wondering has anyone had this problem with there brakes.

Pedals nice and hard for about 3 days but as time goes by the pedal becomes soft so then pump the brake pedal until it firms up then the pedal stays nice and firm and hard for a few days then back to square one soft pedal.

Checked the usual signs of leaks but none any ideas please.

Could be worn/corroded parts causing application inconsistencies.

Worst I've seen was an otherwise good brake pad where the friction material had partially delaminated from the backing plate and was lifting away acting like a spring between itself and the disc causing symptoms like you described.

Thanks for that a will check but they are new discs and pads all round cheers.

Hi does anyone no if these brake master cylinders have a bleed nipple on them

My 2006 1.9 PD105 has an ATE master cylinder and despite others opinions I can assure you it does not have a bleed nipple, there is a small torx head bolt on the lower outboard side which merely adds a little security to the reservoir from being pulled directly up and off.

Thanks for that.

Get them bled with VCDS - It bleeds each circuit via the ABS Pumps. It will help.

I don't have VCDS myself but a mate at work did (he's now left  ) and he did it. It was a simple matter of plugging it in, selecting the routine from the menu, following the instructions on the screen (pressing brake pedal, holding, lifting off in sequence) for each circuit. You could hear the tone of the pumps change as the air was purged from the system. Braking felt much better and more sure footed under heavy braking. Before it felt a little squirmy,

That's brilliant thanks just need to find VCDS now.

Just wondering if a opened the brake fluid reservoir and started the engine put foot down on the brake pedal and kept it there could the air escape from the ABS pump instead of using VCDS just a thought.

Any thoughts on this thanks

Air is unlikely to come out of the ABS pump unless you use VCDS.

When was the brake fluid last changed? If it was more than two years ago, take the car to a decent garage and have them replace it as they will need to bleed the brakes afterwards...

The fluid was changed about 6 months ago .

Would anyone no the step by step process on the vcds by any chance for bleeding the air out of the ABS pump

The easiest, slowest and safest way to bleed brakes is to gravity bleed. Just a case of opening the nipple. The higher reservoir pushes the fluid out, just keep it topped up. You'd be surprised how quick a drip fills up a jam jar!
