Skoda fabia idle engine problem

i've a problem with skoda fabia 1.2 with only 80k Km  the engine is Choking/Shuddering while idling. I changed the air filter, candles, distribution chain, and many others things but i still have the same problem. and sometimes the engine do not want to start the first attempt.

 

Can you please help. this engine drives me crazy.

Might be worth changing the fuel filter too as after that amount of mileage/age, it may be clogging up with debris.

Diagnostic scan (vagcom, carista etc) would help you greatly.

 

If the engine is the 3 cyl petrol HTP, then usual culprit is one or more of the coilpaks and/or spark plugs. Less likely, it can be a faulty fuel injector.  Even less likely it might be worn valve seats in the head but I dont think likely at 80k km unless the oil has never or rarely been changed and problems would progess gradually over a long period.

 

If the engine is the 4 cyl tsi then the plain plug leads fitted without any trunking (called marten protection) as used on early versions often fail - usually on number 3 cylinder, due to overheating on the exhaust shield. Unfortunately that often kills the 4 way coilpak too. More seriously, engines built before 2013 have camchain design and quality issues (usually you will have heard loud rattles on start up). They stretch and eventually jump on the camshaft sprockets upsetting the timing and very often causing serious engine damage. Diagnostic will show.

 

TIP - if the car detects misfiring, it usually shuts down fuelling to the cylinder responsible. The stored fault does not always clear immediately on restart, so if you change plugs/leads etc then start the car and rev at around 2000+ rpm for around ten or more seconds to give the ecu a chance to retry.

 

If its the 1.2 diesel (greenline) engine then I believe these have serious design issues. Search the forum for further information.

 

Diagnostic scan will help point to the fault.

 

Finally I note you are in Algeria, could it be a fuel quality issue, is there a chance it is contaminated?

Exactly the engine is 3 cyl. today the old owner of my car informed that somehow the chain destribution broke and he change it also the valve. i was not aware about this before until today. do you think that maybe the problem comes from this ?

I understand you changed the spark plugs (candles) but did you change the coil packs (which sit on top of the plugs)? These are by far the most common failure on the htp engine. When one fails the engine runs like a pig with no power. However when they fail, the engine and emission warning lights come on and diagnostics will usually show which cylinder is misfiring.

Has it ever run correctly while you had it? If not, I fear you've been sold a pup.

 

For a camchain to break on a mk ii HTP at 80,000 km (50,000 miles) indicates extreme neglect! No or few oil changes. Or its been clocked and done more like 200k+.

 

A broken or jumped chain would have probably done extensive damage to pistons and valve gear. The previous owner says he changed the chain and a valve or more than one?  That may not have been enough.

 

You need to perform wet and dry compression tests to establish if the valves are seating and sealing correctly and the pistons/rings/walls have not been compromised. Compare to workshop values.

 

Also check the timing, that the chain is fitted correctly and timing adapted correctly. Consult the workshop manual for the procedures.

thank you for reply @X man. yes i got scammed as i never owned fabia before or 3 cyl engine.

otherwise today i have consulted two mechanic, the first one told that i've to change many thing on the engine valves,  pistons ... and ensure there is no other damage as valve gear.

the second one used a diag software and told me that the problem isn't valve or piston. he said that the engine is pretty well. he doubt the camchain is not fitted correctly. and also the software shows the error " intake air leakage"

 

for now if the pistons, valve or engine is damage there will be no other symptom  since in road I drive more than 150km / h without any problem ? what do you think. i'm confused !

Examine the vacuum hose from inlet manifold to the brake servo; cracks in the hard plastic pipe at any of the four joints are common, causing air leaks once they get bad enough.

Yes, do as Wino says :thumbup:

 

If you can do 150kph then its not a timing problem. Wino is correct that the brake vacuum hose should be checked first especially because of what the diagnostic has reported.

Sounds like the first repairer wanted a bit of work/money out of you!
