Fog / DLR bumper lights wiring

Featured Replies

Hey all

Got a Octavia 2 2011

Could you help me with wiring those lamps  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Skoda-Octavia-2010-2013-2x-White-LED-Daytime-Day-Fog-Lights-DRL-Run-lamp/272812026319?hash=item3f84dd29cf:g:qg0AAOSwYHxWQJZW

for now I have fitted them and wired neutral to engine bay fuse box and i have borrowed + from one of the 10A fuses using  piggy back fuse .

light came on but it was flashing in the engine rhythm ,

Now im thinking of wiring in to the existing DRL witch is built in to the headlamp cluster , would that be possible for me to do that  ?

Would be nice to use same running light switch to switch on new led and those build in to the lamp .

Am I thinking right  ? If yes could some one help me do that please .

Thanks

Greg

A 2011 Octavia doesn't have DRL in the headlight cluster, nor does it have a physical switch for DRL. Do you mean the sidelights?

Why did you take neutral to the fuse box? Any suitable ground in the engine bay should be fine.

Which fuse did you piggy back from?

Radio F8 , and yes side lights , neutral went to all of the earth connected to the side of the fuse box

There shouldn't be any interference or pulsing on F8 assuming both connections are good. I'd also expect that to be a permanent live so the DRL would always be on, even with the car locked.

I probably wouldn't connect them directly the sidelights as the bulb monitoring might cause interference and throw a bulb out warning. They also wouldn't be road legal as they won't turn off/dim when the headlights are on.

Have they just got two wires?

I assume your car didn't have fog/DRL to start with?

Do they still pulse if connected directly to the battery with the engine running? Do this at your own risk etc...

connections should be ok  , Ive used one of the fused piggy back cables , I havent check direct to the battery but I will , and will update on this ,

No my car didnt came with DRL  ,

Yes only two wires , you can see pic in the ebay link with them .

Took me longer than expected but had another go today on those lights .

Connected straight to battery and working fine , tested also being connected to side lights and working fine again , now just need to make a proper connection to side lamps and should work fine , Hope that there will be no errors after fitting but will soon find out .

Thanks for your help

As said above, to be legal you should switch them through a relay activated by the supply to the dipped beam so that the new DRL lamps are off when the headlights are on. Make sure the relay has a Normally Closed contact and use that (not all relays have a NC contact).

Afterthought: Instead of supplying power via the side lights, why not use a fuse position that comes alive when the ignition is on, so it is just like the factory fitted DRL. No need then to switch on the sidelights.

Afterthought added.

It appears that the legal position is that the DRL should switch off if any other lights are on, including the sidelights.

So feed the relay coil from the sidelights and the new lamps from the ignition switched supply and via the NC contact on the relay.
