Diesel exhaust smell inside car

Featured Replies

Hi all

Got a bit of a funny problem. My car smells like minging exhaust smell, only when I'm sitting in traffic for longer than about 30 secs then it goes away when I get moving.

I'm thinking it might be because the leather gaiter around the gearstick isn't there any more and the fumes might be getting up through there. I'd never noticed it before recently and it was only recently that I took the gaiter off

Any ideas? Am i on to the right track?

Possibly. But if there are fumes there is likely an exhaust problem. Should get it up on a ramp and inspected for exhaust leaks, exhaust centre maybe cheapest option.

@hebdenwill - I'd suspect that the exhaust downpipe has gone porous, probably in the flexible section. I got the same symptoms when that happened to mine.
