LED interior lighting

Featured Replies

i am replacing a glove compartment bulb...old incandescent type and i am overwhelmed by LED ads on ebay etc for up lighting.

i would like to do the inside lights.. 3 lights in the front and 2 in the back initially as they seem easy to access.

any advice on supply and type

cheers

not at pc but there some links in my project build, make sure take the fuse out when you do the glove box or boot otherwise its a trip to Halfords in the dark! I think its 39mm festoon & 5ws for rest

thanks

i will check that measurement on the festoon and compare the other little 5ws ones...

can you suggest the best way to get into the bulbs.. the front one and the passenger one...

i am a bit heavy handed at times and tend to go in with screwdriver blade at the wrong place...i did my engineering apprenticeship in a shipyard...inch by thick stuff/hammer and chisel..:wondering:

it always seems easier putting any click in place stuff back but not so easy to take out...

thanks

The glove box and boot,

This is a bit more tricky you have to find something to prise out on the plastic edges, at this point you should disconnect the internal light fuse (NO 23)

Getting the bulbs out i made contact and shorted everything hence my comment 'trip to halfords in the dark!'

The boot one was definitely the hardest so do that last

thanks again...

speaking of the boot and glove compartment, previous to this thread..

i found neither worked and did get them out.. i put the tiniest screwdriver in the end between the fitting and the trim, closed my eyes and said a prayer..and voila..out they came...great

problem one...the boot didnt have any wire connected and none to be found after spending time probing around in the void...

the glove compartment one had a wire and obviously burnt out..an incandescent bulb..sort of brownish at the end...so i tenderly applied my little screwdriver and phut...the fuse 23  went...its a strange fitting almost as if made by a blacksmith with exposed metal parts..

i have sent for the identical bulb...i dont want or need led in there...and a box of 20 assorted fuses..

i mention this just since you did and felt a real sense of camaradarie..

great minds? do the same..:wondering:

if you go to this thread perhaps you can comment?

i will wait till i get the leds for the interior lights before i fit the glove compartment bulb...the boot is a mystery and without resolution so far...i have two led torches in the boot anyway

in the passing would you say that the interior light for the back seat passenger illluminations is just as easy to come out as the front one..

cheers

im not the best with electrics had a look at your boot light post, there should definitely be 2 wires leading to the fitting?

Also if the bulb doesnt work turn them 180 Degrees. Its 50/50 chance with the map readers as well.

ive read on this forum that some folk 'bypass' the boot light with LED strips by feeding to the positive & negative wires. So you need to find the wire's for certain for this as well. This is another option for you.

yes very strange

if i could get a hold of the supply even broken off i could do as you say...either replace the original with an led fitting or fit up some other type of fitting..led strips sounds good..

believe me there isnt a whisper of a cable for that boot light...and the unit i took out shows marking for there being  a connection to it

worst case scenario....the chap wanted to change the dud fitting and pulled it out too hard...along with the cable supply back to dear knows where...and then threw away the broken cable attached to the fitting and put the bare fitting back in to fill the hole

i imagine he felt a bit sick at the time and probably spent some time trying to find the loose end

as i understand it the boot light is fed from a microswitch on the boot lock...so that when you click the boot open the light comes on....and that is in the boot lid...

really dont want to go down that road...a battery operated manual light will do...

its the interior lights and the glove compartment i want to upgrade to led...

i have taken out all the existing bulbs... and sized them so i am sourcing them now.. 3 festoon and 2 of the little wedge ones...

ps thanks for mentioning the fact one needs to turn them round if they done work one way...they will the other way...this would have fooled me

cheers

my interior lighting to the front roof are...1 42mm festoon and 2 wedge type bulbs

to the rear passenger area are 2 39mm festoons

i am hoping to source these from the same supplier

question here is the Lm ratings available....10/20/40/60 and higher

can anyone advise what rating would be "comfortable" to just illuminate the cabin

cheers

Yes the boot is tricky but in your case extremely difficult? No wires and you have to connect to the boot switch as well, otherwise re-wiring say from passenger light could be permanently on?

Ive seen custom mods where folk have 're lit' their entire footwells & that switches off when you lock the car (as do all the other internal lights) - so maybe this is an option?

yes...any boot lights can be switched effectively via the rear parking lights/number plate...as it will be dark when needing them

that is a route i could follow...i assume that led's loading will be ok within any fuse ratings...

moving forward i could change the parking lights and number plate light to led...

its a moveable feast is it not??

have you any experience of led bulbs and the best ones to go for...lots of cheapies out there...

cheers

I think with led bulbs it is a biy of trial and error which ones to buy.

Look for ones with good reviews and good feedback %.

Very often you can buy, say, six for a little more than the price of two. I would advise buy the six then you have spares and do not have to worry if one doesn't work properly, especially considering how cheap they are.

I have used some exactly alike in the first link. 4 in line with aluminium backing. 42mm.

They are ok but surprisingly not quite as bright as the W5W reading lights either side of it.

If you change the number plate you may need resistors (even though canbus)

Lighting for Reg Plate festoons (had to bend contacts) you may need + 2 or 3mm width on mine

  • ATTENTION: Some newer canbus/bulb error systems may cause the lights to blink, turn off or still give an error on the dash. On this rare occasion the bulbs will require additional load resistors to ensure normal working bulbs, please contact us for details (2007/2008 onwards VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat/VW group cars may require these)

Resistors for Reg Plate Festoons -Ask for Plug & play resistors if you dont fancy soldering.

that is getting really complicated

i thought canbus meant no error...

i do see for more money you can get good guarantees on items..

the resistors idea is putting me off now...getting a sore head....

all is fair thought

cheers and thanks

I'd link my purchase Geof if i knew how, but i don't. Sorry. They are only slightly less bright but I am not mega fussy at £2.99 for six bulbs.

I doubt interior lighting will give bulb errors as these are not an mot failure (for instance)

The puddle lights (or at least mine) do not give error messages using non Canbus friendly.

I'd want six of each bulb and still want to pay less than that, geof.

what is the error message anyway...it appears on your instrument cluster??

how does it affect the lighting or is it just a warning of ??

as you have observed

i simply am going to upgrade the roof lights and the glove compartment

the boot light is quite another story...and mysterious with it...

i know..

i will probably go that route

if the led's give me trouble i will have all those extras in the kit?

good thoughts

Do not worry about errors unless you do your number plate ones.

search  ebay                     6x 42mm 4SMD                It will bring up the ones i purchased and they work fine. Top of list seller flcloverfaith.
