Leaky turbo

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2008 Octavia Vrs CR170 and have just been given the lovely news that the turbo has started to leak. Its a very slight leak so could be another year left on it... or not. The price from a Skoda dealership, I'm going to assume, is massive. Is there an OEM parts sellers for Skoda in the uk? Will a Eurocar part be a false economy? (https://www.eurocarparts.com/turbocharger)

Any advice gratefully received.

I know people who have fitted cheap aftermarket turbos from the likes of ebay to cars that were worth sub 5K and they worked great with no issues. However if you plan to keep the car another decade or are paying a garage to do the labour its good piece of mind to maybe get a genuine OEM part from Skoda or TPS maybe?

Just make sure they do a thorough job and make sure the oil feed and oil return are clear etc. etc.

I’m planning on keeping the car long term and I had factored a new turbo into the running costs as it was reasonable high mileage and beat the bloke down on price. Just didn’t expect it this soon :)

Forgive my ignorance but TPS??

Before committing to a new turbo are you 100% sure the diagnosis you have is correct?

TPS is a trade parts distributor for VW group cars. Personally I have never used them but apparently some branches will sell to the public and some won't but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Pretty sure. I saw the slight leak advisory on last year's service inspection which mentioned a leak from a 'turbo pipe', at this service I asked the garage to specifically find exactly where the leaks coming from and what the fix would be. They confirmed it was the Turbo unit itself. :(

Just checked with the local TPS branch... they'll sell me an OEM Turbo unit for £609+VAT, even get five litre of free Skoda oil with it. I was going to wait until it went pop but might just grab the part at that price!!!

Well if you trust them then go for it! I just had a slight concern you were maybe being miss sold a new turbo as its pretty normal to havea bit of oil in the boost pipes and any slight air leak will make the pipe joints look oily when really all you may need is some new seals.

If it drives ok, sounds ok, and it doesn't use lots of oil or smoke I would be tempted to take it for a second opinion

Ah, you've just perfectly described the state of the turbo. Drives fine with no adverse noises, oil use negligible with no smoking. Definitely going to get a second opinion.

Thanks @SuperbTWM!!!

I’ve had a reconed turbo fro Euro Car Parts. It lasted the 2 years i had the car! :)

Hadn't forgotten this, just not had time to get the car to a garage for a second opinion yet! Also the damn DMF has decided to give up with horrific rattles in neutral which has been even worse with the recent cold starts. I'm having the clutch and DMF replaced (thanks for the TPS pointer - saved me ALOT) and then I'll deal with the turbo.

I think my friend got a Turbonetics aftermarket turbo for his Mk 1. He seemed very happy with it and said it was cheaper than a Skoda turbo.

@SuperbTWM - update; finally got a second opinion from a Skoda specialists and looks like the turbo will need replacing 'in the near future'. Worth being sure though.

Cheers @Papfox - I'll have a look at them.

Have you checked with an independant turbo specialist?

I had a rattle on my turbo, local garage and a few others said a whole new turbo replacement at £1600. I took it to a very well reviewed turbo specialist who found the fault, manufactured the parts needed and fixed my turbo for £540. I know it is a different issue but sometimes a specialist can fix inner parts instead of changing out a whole tturbo which mostly works fine.

Thanks @HarleQuinn anything to avoid replacing the whole unit! Not thought of going that route.

Anyone know of/recommend one in Hertfordshire?

*gets on google*
