Strut or Spring?

Featured Replies

Heavy duty “twang” coming from my N/S front wheel, only happened lastnight when driving home from work.

I originally thought it was a snapped spring? anyone else care to guess the diagnosis?

Ive got new springs arriving tomorrow let’s hope I don’t need to order a top strut too, The engine noise is projected as I’m close to my house wall in my drive ...Apologies for the poor quality video.

Not had a chance to get the wheel off and inspect it yet.

Snapped spring, you can jack up and still not see it, can be top and bottom.

So you need to see if standard springs or lowered.

*Drive very very carefully if you have to use the car.*

Edit.

Sorry, no matter what is on now then if new going on.

I have broken ones at this time of year before, cold and going on or off a kerb parking..... Drivers side ones.

Passenger side standard, and rear standard, more expensive than lowering springs.

Thanks mate.

My car pretty much sits dormant over the weekend and my commute to work is less than 3 miles daily so she’s sitting out in the cold for long periods without use, My first thought was the low temps have helped snap and already fragile spring.

It’s impossible to by pass speed bumps where I live I’m hitting at least 4 a day minimum then rolling on and off the lowered kerb to enter/exit my drive, I’ll try get it jacked up tomorrow morning and see if there’s anything noticeable providing it’s not -5

Ive got 40mm H&R’s arriving Thursday, I might just play it safe and replace the top struts as the cars well over 5 years old now.

I had a lot of issues with my old Fabia’s suspension parts, replaced the top mounts and front springs and they were both gone 2 years later albeit they were cheaper parts than OEM.

Your dampers might give up soon than later after those H&R get fitted.

I used Standard Springs when replacing broken ones *much cheapness* because they were take offs from people having Dealer Option Eibach lowering springs fitted.

I’ve had many a lowered car over the years and only ever had problems apart from 2 skoda’s my Audi was dropped 35mm on eibachs and lasted fine, Had a corsa B c20let maxed at 120mm on spax coilovers and that survived ( daily whiplash tho)......I think skoda’s and Scottish roads don’t mix!

Odd really you would think cars built in the Czech Republic would suit Scottish weather much better.

The too cheap materials, poor design & manufacturing of components and poor rust inhibiting is pathetic really.

Loads of fun though.

enjoy.
