Jump-starting DSG

Featured Replies

New to posting on this forum, although I sometimes lurk.  I have a  2014 DSG Yeti and I'm looking after a 2012 DSG Octavia for a friend, who's had her license revoked for 6 months for medical reasons.  The Octy potentially needs a new battery, which got me thinking about a thing I read on the internet that said jump-starting a DSG car off another car or running one on a lowish battery are not good things to do, because it causes a spike in the ECU and could damage mechatronics unit.  I looked around the web for a second source, more out of curiosity than anything (after all, sometimes you have to jump a car) but could not find anything.

My questions are: is jumping a DSG car off another car likely to cause damage?

If so, what are you supposed to do if your battery is flat?  Especially if you are in a remote area with no mobile signal and can't rely on the RAC saving your butt.

As long as you connect the jump leads up correctly, positive leads first, then earth/negative and start the donor vehicle first and allow to run for a few minutes before trying to start the flat vehicle there should be no problems.  Once the vehicle starts let it run for a few minutes before disconnecting the jump leads earth/negative first.

You Jump Start a vehicle with a DSG in the same way as one without a DSG, as there is no other way since you can not bump start it.

The ECU's for the Vehicles with a manual box needs as much care as where there is a vehicle 2 ECU's with a DSG.
