Bizarre Headlight Issue...Arrrgghhh!

Featured Replies

Hi folks, hoping someone can assist / point me in right direction...

coming home tonight, start the car and notice the wee bulb warning light is on...soon becomes apparent the dipped headlights aren't working...

The led sidelights are, and the main beams are, but the dipped aren't.

Also, when I turned the headlight switch from off (fully counterclockwise) to on (fully clockwise)  my instrument lights would go off!

Got home, had my dinner, went back out noticed the instrument lights stayed on when I tried turned the headlight switch...

Swapped the fuse for the headlights but still no joy...

I've tried to listen to the relay when I turn the headlight switch but I can't hear anything.....might be the noise of the car and I'm a bit deaf though...

Any thoughts folks? Not a great time of the year for this!

Thanks in advance, and I've uploaded a youtube video in the hope it might show better what I'm trying to explain....

Thanks!

Maybe its the headlight switch itself that is faulty

There isn't a relay for the headlights in a MK2, it's done by solid state electronics in the BCM.

You're flicking the stitch too quickly. The switch is working normally as the dipped beam symbol is shown in the cluster.

Have you checked the bulbs are fine?

Thanks for the replies guys....cold weather to be working on a car!

I haven't checked the bulbs yet, but I will, just seemed very unlikely for both to go at the same time? How do you mean I'm flicking it too quickly?

Seems a bit odd that the instrument panel light was going off when I turned the headlight switch clockwise at first too, before magically rectifying itself :-) ?

At around the 22 second mark your quickly flicking between side lights and dipped beams.

The car won't react if you flick forward and backwards so quickly, instead you should give it a couple of seconds in each position.

You know the switch is fine if the green dipped beam symbol illuminates in the cluster.

Ah, Ok, thank you, yes the speed of flicking was just for the video really, that's not what I was doing other than for the vid. I left it a good while between turns and left on for good while but no joy. I'll have a look at the light bulbs

Thanks for the help, turned out it was both bulbs had blown. Replaced and working fine. Hopefully not an underlying electrical issue!

Cheers.

It's not unknown for one bulb to fail quickly after another. Glad it's sorted for now :)
