Had the same problem with mine a few yrs back, and it was also solved by yanking the rear wiper fuse :)

The rear wiper motor probably has screenwash inside it. It's a pretty common issue unfortunately, but easily fixed with a replacement motor.

Stripping and cleaning the old one may work for a while, but I replaced mine with new and the problem never came back while I owned the car.
