Excel formula ..help

Featured Replies

Brain has gone dead

I'm trying to use excel to work out my gas bill weekly to keep an eye on where the energy goes (I know I am a sad person) but can someone tell me what formula to use...or more to the point how to write it in excel ......

I want

= A1 X 2.83 =meters cubed X 1.022640 (conversion factor) X 39.01733 (calorific value) divided by 3.6 to get KWH

=A1*2.830*39.01733*1.02264\3.6 doesn't work, tried a few brackets and now severe brain ache has got me :o .....can some nice kind person help please

Thanks in advance

You've slashed in the wrong direction (and not for the first time? lol). I would do:

=A1*2.830*39.01733*(1.02264/3.6)

:)

Somehow MissPiggy has come up with one that works as well  ...I reckon that will be the culmination of everything today ...she reckons shes a genius

=((A1*2.83)*(1.02264)*(39.01733))/3.6

Thanks and sorry for passing my brainache on to others

how does that one work? surely due to BoDMAS, the brackets and division would be calculated first before the rest?

my formula was:

=((A1*2.83)*(1.02264)*(39.01733))/3.6

lots of brackets:P i used to love brackets in maths at school!:D

Sarnies I would think........Have to nip to the supermarket later so I might get some nice ham and some really nice bread/bread buns to scoff while i'm watching footy on the box........" COME ON WIGAN "..[oh...and Bolton ]

No brackets needed really since its just * and /. The problem was the slash. Brackets in this case just help follow the formula back thru for checking.

Roast, mmm, now that sounds nice.

Bodmas (or bidmas as it's sometimes taught) generally doesn't apply to computer calculations. A few years ago I asked a colleague to make a flash based scientific calculator and he had a nightmare getting bodmas and direct algebraic logic to work within it. Computers tend to work from left to right on that sort of calculation, although will take account of the brackets as and when they are needed.

What's BODMAS?

Concur with the previous poster who mentioned that it's just * and / .Brackets are irrelevant in this case.

What's BODMAS?

god what school did you go to?? mum didnt know either!!

We didn't have computers at school....so exel or bodmas didn't even come into the teaching.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

Rob, if you can understand your gas bills ongoing, I take my hat off to you. I tried this a couple of years ago cos I couldn't see what was going on. I'm not bad at Excel, but every bill had a different number of "First" units, together with different and changing prices (mid bill of course).

I decided it was all gobbledegook and that I could either get them to explain  (read spend forever on phone money or stamps), or just pay the darn bills.

Good luck my friend.

Thinking cars, someone on telly said that their house heating system ran off oil and its price had doubled. With this LPG thing, should we all be thinking about a domestic conversion away from gas, elec and oil?

Well heck, Tom Good (The Good Life) got a methane generator going...IIRC

Already thinking about that, just waiting for JohnyC to run it and see how good it is before I start saving for it. ......http://www.windsave.com/index.htm

and the gas bill thing is easy now I just enter the readings in excel and the KWh's and price comes up.....I am just trying to sort out my fuel usage and see where savings can be made

The government are going to be forced along the nuclear route so eventually electricity prices wont jump everytime gas and oil prices go up. Electric heat pumps will be the thing especially since they can provide cooling also.

You could just multiply your cell value by 31.366369737193
