Clunking sound from front offside wheel

Featured Replies

Ok, I will have this seen just after Christmas, but I want to know from the mechanics here what is most likely the issue. My guess is that the shock absorber needs replacing.

Start of problem: I was reversing out of my parking at home, all flat no bumps, did not hit anything. As soon as I started moving, I heard a loud clunk from the front offside wheel. After moving out from the small car park outside my home which has a concrete ramp & taking it easy, once on the road again I hear the same loud clunk a couple of times a few seconds between each other. This was happening randomly, & even when not going over bumps. The last time I heard this loud clunk so far was when going back home when entering the small park & driving into the concrete ramp again taking it very slowly.

Symptoms caused since hearing these loud clunks: The tracking has gone off & possibly the alignment. Happened within the space of a week, The steering is not pulling one direction or another. Driving in a straight line though now, the steering is about 10 degrees to the left rather than on centre. Also there is more vagueness, & can feel a bit sloppy + loose at times.

What is happening now: Tracking + alignment & steering feel are the same. No more loud random clunks. Now when I drive over bumps, I hear more of a clanging sound which is not as loud as the clunks of before. Suspension is still ok, although I am taking it more easy on my bad local roads. Not doing a Driving Miss Daisy, just being a bit more careful thats all.

Have you had a look at the springs?

Yes but only visually, cannot determine if that is at fault. Still it will be looked at by a garage & I will inform of the problem when known.

@sleeper77 - First thought is a broken spring, probably right up at the pig ear so it needs a proper look, not just a glance.

what´s the milage of the car?

Spot on. Had it looked today, mechanic confirmed this & also showed me. Getting this sorted asap.

Had the offending front offside spring replaced & problem sorted. Just needs a bit of an alignment correction
