Servicing low mileage Fabia 2

Recommended Posts

My wife and I have just purchased a 2009 Fabia 2 1.6 tiptronic which has done less than 21000 miles. I suspect the servicing so far has mostly consisted of oil changes.

I will also be a low mileage user. I need to know the recommended intervals for changing pollen and air filters, spark plugs, coolant and hydraulic fluid so I can organise them at sensible intervals commensurate with time and mileage.

Can anyone recomend a suitable book or download.

Thanks, PB.

Welcome.

When was there any record of servicing.?

Brake Fluid is at 3 years and then each 2, it used to be first at 2 years when your car was new.

Spark plugs can be 40,000 miles, but at 8 years time to change, or at least look at them.

If running ok best go first with checking Anti Freeze Strength. Tyre Pressures.

Checking brakes, servicing and changing brake fluid.

Then check air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs, Service Items.

Oil & Filter.  Leave the gearbox well alone.

Hi Peter and welcome to the forum :)

Do you do your own servicing ?

I do most of the routine servicing on our 2 cars myself.

I usually 'arrange' things so that I do servicing in the spring and autumn as necessary  (in the past I have even done MOT's early to avoid winter MOT's)

I ignore mileage for air filters (once I have done the initial service of course) and usually change air filter just before MOT (but very low mileage might be  every second MOT ).

Critical items are obviously Oil and Filter, checking brakes, brake fluid age  and tyre condition and also making sure that the cambelt (if engine has one :) ) is not more than 5 years old as they will  deteriorate with age.

Hello!

the most important thing is the timing belt, it should be changed every 4 years although it doesn't state that in the owners guide.

The Fabia has an interference engine so a broken  belt causes untold damage to the engine.

It's probably best to find a local Skoda specialist, I had the belt changed on my diesel estate in the summer.

Local specialist was £100 cheaper than main dealer.

It is possible to diy, but the engine mounting has to be removed and the engine supported whilst the belt is removed and replaced.

Special tool is bolted across the top suspension mounts to support the engine, without this tool you have to use a jack on the sump.

Personally I would perform a major service as recommended in the service book, Haynes do a comprehensive manual for the Fabia is about £15 in Halfords.

Hope this helps,

Colin

Thank you to all for servicing advice.

I get a local garage to do the work now I am older, but to my specification. Next time I shall probally get all the filters, fluids and plugs done  just because of the cars age despite the low mileage. My research tells me it has a timing chain, l hope you all agree.

Does anyone know what a lambada probe is?  it seems to need replacing occasionally.

Now I need to mount our tomtom somewhere suitable. As the windscreen is relatively low it really needs to be at dash height. An air vent fixing, probally from Halfords, seems  the easiest  option. Does anyone have a better idea.

Happy New year.

Do not worry about the 'Lambda Sensor', part of the exhaust emissions controls, you will get a warning on exhaust emissions if there is an issue or if the Lambda Sensor is faulty etc.

(i have a 19 year old car with 28,000 miles and the original Lambda Probe fitted.  Touch wood now having said that...)

We use a 'beanbag' friction mount which sits on top of the dash wherever you want it,ours is a garmin type and is pretty stable ( would work ok with tomtoms) but there are other makes available.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Universal-Friction-Mount-700/dp/B000LRMS66/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1514799343&sr=8-7&keywords=satnav+bean+bag

We also have a 'Tacky' hard plastic mount which also works very well with the fabia and isn't too big to store in the glove box when not reqd.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Automotive-Portable-Friction-Mount-Black/dp/B001S2RCWI/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1514799747&sr=8-10&keywords=garmin+sat+nav+mount+for+dashboard

I am not saying these are the cheapest prices available but just to show options.

We also have a windscreen suction mount but I have not tried it in the Fabia because of where the 12v socket is (right back near the H/Brake) and I keep forgetting to get a little extension lead for it,these are the cheapest and smallest to store in glove box.
