Noisey Octavia

Featured Replies

I am the proud owner of a 4 month old Mk2 Octavia Hatch 2.0TDi DSG. I have had many cars over the last 25 years (from Astra's to Rover 75) and this has to be the quickest.

My only criticism is the road noise. I have to confess to having the 17

I contacted Debbie at Noisekiller who replied:

"We do an Octavia kit £165 inc vat. Factory fitting (Manchester) £90 inc vat

Mobile fitting £130 inc vat"

She sent me some sample soundproofing materials through the post - they look fairly high-tech when compared with the old tarry felt stuff I fitted to My Renault 4 some decades ago - the black glue took days to get off my hands....

Before lashing out £255-295 I too would like to know how effective the kit is. Any personal experiences?

What tyres have you got ?

I have the standard fit Bridgestones 225/45R17. Yes they are fitted the right way round (asymetrical) and at the right pressures. I have now done 7,000 miles and things have not changed since new. Everyone seems to blame the tyres but this version of the "Bridgestone Protenza" is supposed to have "low noise" as one of it's characteristics, according to the Bridgestone Website.

Something else I didn't mention - I also seem to suffer with the "creaky" steering (noise and slight vibration through the steering wheel at low speed during tight manouvering) as documented elsewhere in the forum - which is aparently due to a fault with the steering rack. I have yet to visit the dealer about this. Could this be generating extra road noise feedback??

Bridgestones! Get shot of em. My bet is that its a lot to do with the tyres. I have bridgestones and although i've got used to the noise, i'll be changing them for something quieter next time they need replaced.

As far as I know it depends on the model of Bridgestone tyres you have fitted - the RE040 are known to be very noisey - however the RE050 are much better.

I found the road noise on Elegance 2.0TDI DSG running on 16 inch Dunlop Sport. I have never liked Dunlop tires and those fitted to previous vehicles as original equipment have usually worn out rapidly.

The standard tire pressures recomended by Skoda seem very high for this size of vehicle usaully carrying no more than two passengers so you tend to get a harsh and hard ride. I queried this with Skoda UK and asked if they had experimented with lower tire pressures, but did not get to far it seems that their Service people do not play around with vehicle settings, something we did as a matter of course in my day.

I took out 2 PSI all round on my car and this seems to have provided a smoother and less noisy ride without any drop in handling, not that I am a limit pushing driver.

Past Bridgestone tires I have used were always high mileage due to the hard compound used, which when coupled with high tire pressures would tend to give a harsh and hard ride.

Most tires are a trade off for the condition each individual driver wishes to operate, car manufacturers are looking for something different the lowest price for optimum performance.

Noiticed a big difference in noise with mine when moving from Bridgestones to Michelin Pilot Primacy's and that's on standard wheels.

Octy 2 L&K (TDi 140 bhp DGS) arriving soon(ish). Which tyres should I expect it to come with as standard? And what advise on pressures?

In my experience most manufacturers recommend excessive tyre presures 'cos that improves the MPG. A bit of trial and error is always in order.

Same car, same wheels & tyres, same problem. I'm up to 12000 miles now and it seems a little better (perhaps i've got used to it) but as soon as I get down to 2mm's on the front I will try a pair of continentals.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I will try different tyre pressures over the next few weeks.

I have also requested information from noise killer and I will keep you informed if I go ahead and what the results are.

Cheers.

On my Octy II Elegance estate 1.9 I have got Bridgestone tyres on the standard VEGA alloys, the ride seems quiet and smooth to me but this could be because I have been used to driving the Fabia VRS on low profile Continental tyres. Also my drive to work is on a concrete duel carriageway. The Fabia seemed very noisey on this but have to say the Octy seems pretty quiet considering the road surface.

I contacted NoiseKiller and was informed the latest price is £170 + £9 delivery. However' date=' they haven't done an Octavia MK 2 kit yet which makes me wonder if it is just me being too critical, but my wifes Renault Megan 1.5D is so much quieter it is embarrassing. I use a nokia hands-free mobile phone kit and people can't hear me over the road noise when on the motorway.

The Dealer has now looked at the steering noise and confirmed it needs a new steering rack - they knew about it from a technical buletin but had not had one before. This is not in stock and they will ring to book it in when they get one.[/quote']

1.5D Meganes are incredibly quiet. We have had 3 of them. just about any other average diesel car will sound noisy in comparison save maybe the 2.2 Honda or Nissan engines.

It's the injectors on the VAG PD engines that cause the racket. The 2.0TDi (170 bhp) engine has piezo injectors that apparently really quieten the engine down. I don't mind it tbh. Once my car is up to speed it's pretty quiet except for that tyre noise of course.

Just taken delivery of a new octy elegance est DSG and it seems pretty quiet after my Ibiza Sport 130 tdi. Had to drive my newly aquired 205 1.6 Gti from the Lakes to Watford on Saturday morning. Now THAT was noisy.

If you hate noise DONT get a Merc B class, we tested one last week as part of the new car research, the one thing we expected was a quiet ride & thats the one thing we didnt get. There was a massive combination of wind, mechanical & tyre noise, it all combined to give a very anoying drone, it was just horrid. It was a pleasure to get back into the old Octy with over 100000 miles on it. Interestingly & perhaps more back on topic my wife also thought the new Octy L&K was noisy when she tested it. Its looking more & more like a Superb will be the next car, a tadge bigger than we wanted but its just such a fantastic car to drive. My wife does 35-40000 miles a year so comfort with economy is essential.

Hi Jonny

I am not worried about the engine noise - I have had lots of deisels before and this one is not essessive. It is all road noise that is my problem and concrete sections of road make the noise unbearable. As I mentioned I have the 17" wheels and sports suspension on my Elegance, but I am supprised no-else seems to think the noise is an issue.

Big wheels + sports suspension sounds to me like a tailor-made recipe for excessive road noise. Have you tried the same car with standard wheels and suspension?

I've just taken delivery of a 1.6 L&K and it is fitted with Bridgestones which so far I have found to be noisy on some road surfaces. On my previous car (Cavalier) I had Michelins which I found to be good all round.

How long are the Bridgestones likely to last before replacement is due and where do I find out what the tyres pressures should be - I can't see any reference in the 200 page manual?

On the old Octy it was on a sticker inside the fuel filler flap

This is my second Octavia MK 2 (but I won't bore you with the whole story). The first Elegance had the standard 16" wheels and I thought that was a bit noisey (which makes me think I am being critical) but the 17" are far worse.

Tire pressures are located on the inside flap of your fuel filler cap.

Try dropping the reccomended tire pressure by 2 PSI all round and see if this helps.
