Postcode risk rating - big hike in policy

Featured Replies

Just about to move house and my renewal is up just after I move. My current postcode starts with LL14 and my new one CH5. I've looked online and the postcodes are both classed as the same risk rating. I put some revised quotes in with the old address and it was approx. £275 annually. Changed just my address and my quote went up to over £600!!!

Safe to say I'm really hacked off about this. I was seriously not expecting this!

I'm assuming that insurers base it on more than the postcode alone? Not that crime rates are particularly higher around here. Makes no change to take off commuting or even to put the car in the garage! This is only for my 'cheap' runaround Fabia which is bog standard...

Yeah the cost of your insurance is not purely based on where you live. A lot more to it than that.

If it helps, I moved literally a 1/4 mile up the road, still a BS7 postcode, but it went up from about £300 to £700.

Regarding the two postcodes being the same risk... that’s down to the individual insurers to decide what they set it at and I am not sure you will find a one size fits all result on the net.

IMO you’ve gone from a very low risk in the LL postcode (Wales) to a CH (Cheshire), which is much higher. (Using the 12 years experience I had at a very large insurer) Think of all those pro footballers and their Chelsea tractors tempting the scrotes to the area.

Cheers for your input mate. Think I'm just more peeved off than anything at the minute - it's ridiculous. Part of the reason I moved was because it was closer to work and saved me money on fuel. Some of that has now almost immediately been negated...

I'm not even near Chester or anywhere hugely built up. It's very similar at the new address to where I currently am in Wales in terms of crime etc...  It's a complete bloody lottery with them. I'm just hoping that one of the specialists can quote me a lot better now. I can't even remember the last time I paid anywhere near this much for car insurance.

No worries dude.

Yup, I can emphasise having been through similar myself. My previous job in insurance didn’t make it any easier to swallow

Keep searching mate, you’ll come across someone who can help I’m sure.

Cheers pal. I have another 14 days to find something decent anyway. Fingers crossed...

@alex_e3 @jars These days insurance area ratings work on full postcodes, not just the outward halves you've been discussing. Alex, if you're still in a "rural area", maybe try NFU Mutual? If you, or an immediate relative (parent, sibling or cousin or their spouse) works or has worked for the Civil Service or a successor organisation like BT or QinetiQ LV= too.

I know, it was that way when I still worked in the industry.

Could be due to a large number of unrelated claims in that post code. Couple of bad drivers who keep having dings or maybe a spate of keying.

I had insurance refused after moving house once upon a time. I had to fight to get the reason out of them eventually escalated to their legal team.. Turned out there was an error in their postcode database and mine wasn't there. House wasn't new and the post office and council didn't have any problem finding it.

Apology  and promised discount on renewal never appeared, so neither did any repeat business with Endsleigh from me..

it's all random anyhow...   my mum turned 80 a few days ago and quotes went up by about £200 in the space of a few days between before and after her birthday...   same car, same house, same mileage, same driving style, same routes...   just a day older.

I know that as people get older they will be statistically more likely to have an accident but seriously...

On the back of the last post...  I'm meant to be collecting the new Octy 245 on Friday, so have been shopping around for insurance quotes. Since I last put quotes in a month ago, the price for the Octy has now gone back down by £300 and is fairly sensible again!!! On the new address too.

Unbelievable...

Ken, going O/T- but tell more, as it's not something I've seen mentioned or heard about. I'm interested as my main pension provider is BT. ( BTW- NO ONE WORKS for BT-many are employed, but few are caught working)

Contact LV= by phone and tell them you used to work for BT. They'll take it from there, and will also quote you discounted home and travel insurance.

Thanks ken. Bit late for car this year, but I'll keep it in mind next year. Home insurance will be very hard to beat. BTW- for those with even a small pension from AVIVA- they recognised my details and gave me a quote with 20% off this year .
