Gearbox oil - too little or too much?

Featured Replies

I changed my gearbox oil several months ago & since then its has been sometimes difficult to change gear, gears disengage ok but they have to be almost forced in.

I put 2 litres of the Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75W-80 in after being told 2 litres was enough. However, after further reading, it seems that 2.5 litres is the right amount. Could having too little oil in the gearbox be causing my difficulties when it comes to changing gear or is there another underlying problem?

Also, if I did top it up, is it ok just to keep adding oil until it come out of the filler hole or would this type of over-filling cause other issues.

Cheers

btw, I've got a MK1 VRS 53 plate

its 2.3 litres for the vrs. Yes you can keep filling until it just starts coming out the filler hole.

The issue may be with the type of oil you are using. I was under the impression only OEM stuff should be used, but its £25 per litre. I recently did mine and its improved it quite a bit especially when cold.

If it was working ok before the oil change then I would guess the oil is the problem.

There’s a few threads about what oil to use & the main consensus was that the Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75W-80 was one of the best.

If theres anyone that could verify this, I would appreciate it.

The oil is fine, the problem is that you didn't put enough in.

OK thanks, I'll top it up.

So there's no issue in putting too much in? Just keep going till it comes out the fill?

Yes, as long as the car is level of course.

Topped up the oil. Managed to get about another 0.5 litre in before it started to come out the filler.

Car much better at changing gear now, gears engage much better, so problem solved. Cheers.
