I have a Fabia Estate 2016, 1.2 TSI. On cold mornings the brakes sound horrible and are very weak until I’ve braked a bit to warm them up. Is this normal? There’s only 15000 miles on the clock so I wouldn’t have thought they need changing yet?

Maybe best you check them or have them checked. See how much wear the brake pads have.

How much surface rust builds up over night?

 

Not sure about the rust, I’ll have a look. I’ve booked them in to my local Skoda for them to have a look.

If I leave my car more than a day at this time of year the the first couple of brake applications make a slight noise - it's just slight surface rust being worn off, this forms especially after a heavy rain  storm etc.. ie it's probably normal

 

Just to make sure - get someone to check check/examine your brakes
