Great Long term Review by Pistonheads - 280 Sportline Estate

Featured Replies

I don't think I've seen many negative reviews for the 280.  Its the ultimate sleeper car really!

Can't wait to get mine in March :)

Reading reviews like this doesn't help with my impatience!

Fully agree, I got mine a month ago and really like it.

For me it's the perfect car for me with two large dogs, a toddler and 9 month old and also a turn of speed when I need it. I like the fact there are also not many on the road

I'm replacing an aged but faithful 2.0t Petrol Vectra estate which is allegedly 185ps. I know people rubbish Vectras but this one has been an absolutely awesome vehicle for the 110,000 miles I've driven it over the last 14 years.

I am expecting  the Superb to be like the Vectra but better (if that makes any sense) - a good motorway cruiser, able to push on when needed, able to deal with 2 kids, and idiot Springer Spaniel and an obsessive cyclist who has 'the odd few' pushbikes, able to tow my parents caravan when needed. I hope it will as I'll probably have this one another 14 years!

I take it never quite lived up to that then!  You should be well impressed with a 280

Actually, I've looked it up and it was (new)  172bhp and 265Nm, 8.4 to 60. That might explain why its never felt like 185bhp :-)

To be honest its been a  really good car and I've never felt a lack of go in any normal situation and even now it will cruise along at 70 in 6th and cruise control with 5 bikes on the roof, a boot full of diving gear and the kids/dog/wife on board. I guess the 265Nm torque helps with that. Its also (despite the popular myth about Vectras spread by one J. Clarkson, Esq) been a civilised and refined place to travel, and I've done 111,000 of the 114,00 miles on her myself. It has cruise, auto wipers, 6 gears and comfy  seats.

I'm only changing it as it is just getting a bit long in the tooth now and I have recently come into a little money. Other than that we'd probably hang on to it for longer. it cost me 13k in 2004 so my depreciation is about 1k/year and the salesman we are dealing with at Skoda is buying it from me personally for a few quid as a mobile transport for his dog, so can't really complain.

You are right though, the extra 108bhp will probably come as a bit of a surprise when I get the Superb - thats nearly the whole of my missus's Yeti added to my current Vectra power wise.. Whoosh!

worse still, its come early and will be at the dealers next week. I've elected to wait and collect in March on the new plate, but my resolve was seriously tested....

I can see where the temptation would be  alright.  You showed enormous restraint there :) .  Here in Ireland our plates are issued in January and July so it always coninsides with the new year.
