I only logged in to find out about coolant...

Featured Replies

Can I bung any "suits all engines" off-the-shelf coolant into my Fab 1.4 mpi. (Saw a Shell one in the petrol station this morning.)

Ta - it'll save me ages on searching, now I've used up all my time reading other threads :o

It's adviced to use only recommended coolant. Otherwise you could damage your engines inner parts, due coolant not protecting metal surfaces. And two different type chemicals might night mixture properly.

:) Thank you. "Better safe than sorry"

The main clue to which coolant to use these days is its colour. It'll either be blue/green, or orange (most likely the latter). If it's orange, ask for "orange coolant" (honest!). Otherwise it's the old-fashioned antifreeze.

 Mine's pink. It sure ain't blue or green though.

IIRC Pink is Propylene Glycol and blue is Ethylene Glycol...both taste pretty much the same( but the pink stuff might make you go blind quicker... )

kilpijoki said I could damage my engine's inner parts  and you now say I could go blind! Thank heavens for Brisky  I could be in a bad way, let alone the Fabia.

Best get this sorted soonest - there's a VW garage next door, Skodie is a little further Tsk! :bike:

Found this snippet of onfo on the t'interweb...

The blue or pink dye is used to differentiate between Glycol antifreeze solutions which should generally be replaced with fresh mixture every two years. Many modern cars now come filled with organic acid technology (OAT) antifreeze, which has an extended service life of five years. OAT solutions are not compatible with glycol and, if changing from one type to the other, the cooling system must be thoroughly flushed with clean water. Typically OAT antifreeze contains a red or pink dye to differentiate it from glycol (blue or green).

 Too late! Went down to VW garage and bought the "proper stuff" and topped it up. That said, the car's about 4ish years old now so probably doesn't have this new fanged stuff. The bottle says "contains Glycol".

I'm much better on knitting patterns...

The "new-fangled" stuff has been use for about the last 12 years or so IIRC.

My God, it really is 'new fangled' then - WOW :orb_grin

G12+ has been about for around four years.

Ah - OK many grades of pink/orange/red coolant obviously - I remember it in Fords going back quite a way but obviously not all variants are the same.

Only two grades of VAG red coolant, and G12 has been replaced with G12+ that can be mixed with the older blue stuff in an older car.
