Flickering Low Fuel Light

Featured Replies

Hi all,

When my Octi gets low on fuel the buzzer sounds and the warning light flickers on and off. Sometimes it is on all the time but it is a dim glow. I was thinking it may need a new bulb or maybe it is not earthing properly.

I suppose I have to take the instrument panel of the dashboard out to get at the bulb. Is this easy or is it bet left alone? Don't want to fix one problem only to give myself another.

Cheers, Normski.

They use LED's rather than bulbs that are soldered onto the cluster, so not easy to replace. It's probably just an age related issue with the actual sender in the tank, or a bad earth to the cluster.

@Normski55 - I think @octyal is mostly on the right lines, although if the rest of the cluster operates correctly I'd suspect a dryish joint on the feed from the sender rather than a bad cluster earth.

My reasoning for the earth is that in my old MG ZR I had an earth issue that would cause the main beam tell tale to illuminate when braking :) (as well as the interior light to glow slightly too. New earth cable from the battery to the chassis cured it.

Do you have any other electrical gremlins?

@octyal - Great moments in the history of electricity:-

1) Alessandro Volta invents the dry cell.

2) Thomas Edison patents the electric light bulb

3) Joe Lucas invents the short circuit! ;)

Thanks for the relies fellas,

As far as I know there are no other electrical gremlins, everything seems to be working OK. In which case it may be the sender as you mentioned. I'll have a quick look to see if there is anything obvious. If I can't see anything obvious I think I'll probably leave it and live with the flickering light as I don't want to make things worse.

Thanks for your help, Normski.
